I have a 48 hour stop over in Dubai and have been doing some reserach on the transit visa i have to get... most sources say the visa is granted at the point of entry, but there is conflicting info... has anyone had to apply for this visa when visiting Dubai?

Re: 96 hour transit visa for UAE
Well having gone through the whole process last weekend i now know exactly what the process is if you need a transit visa...
The visa is granted at the airport, only through Emirates. Upon landing in Dubai you need to make your way to the Emirates Hotel and Visa desk... there they will check your ticket (you must have a continuing on ticket within 96 hours of landing in Dubai) and you must produce a hotel reservation for your stay... so have that prebooked and bring along the comfirmation letter. Next they will ask you to pay them $75, they will give you a piece of paper and you have to take a walk to the otherside of the arrivals hall and pay a further $52 to the Emirates Bank. Then the waiting game begins... your passport is taken to the immigration office where an officer will eventually sign your visa and return it to you.
The whole process took about 1 and a half hours and there was a little confusion about whether or not was visa was granted... but just remember to keep a cool head and a smile
Hope that's helpful to anyone who like me needs a visa to enter almost every country...

You can Book ahead a so called "Marhaba" Service from Dubai Intl. Airport and so jump very efficient waiting in Lines. They get you from the Plane to the Exit of the Airport.
