A Little Paradise in the Middle of the Caribbean! Old Providence

Figure out the best way to get from Central to South America, when you should book your accommodations for Carnaval and local language school recommendations. If it's on South America, it's in this forum.

Paul,

Here's a name from the past, Kent from Key West. We sort of fell of the edge for awhile, but are now once again making plans for Provedencia. I'll read everything in the posts and then get back with you for some questions that may pop up.

Best,

Kent

Paul,

That would be great. I would enjoy meeting you in person. Dr. LaPonte, my mrine biologis friend who has done work with Corlina, put me in touch with some of the people that work there. That's a couple of years ago, so I need to re-connect with them. Are you woring with Corilina again?

Paul,

My daughter and I have been talking about coming down in July because we can both get the time off then. Unfortunately my wife lost her fight to cancer last year so it will be just the two of us. I'll let you know and come up with some questions for you. And you certainly deserve more than one beer!!!

HELLO PAUL,

I WANT YOU TO KNOW HOW MUCH WE TRAVEL NUTS APPRECIATE THE PASSION WITH WHICH YOU DESCRIBE PROVIDENCIA. HOPEFULLY, YOU STILL LIVE THERE SO WE CAN MEET YOU AND THANK YOU PERSONALLY WHEN WE VISIT YOUR BEAUTIFUL ISLAND.
I AM FROM SANTA MARTA, COLOMBIA. MY HUSBAND AND I ARE PLANNING TO SPEND A WEEK IN PROVIDENCIA IN AUGUST 2010 AFTER 2 WEEKS WITH FAMILY IN THE 'EJE CAFETERO'. PROVIDENCIA WILL BE THE VACATION AFTER THE VACATION.

WELL MY QUESTION TO YOU IS: IS IT EASIER TO RESERVE A HOTEL OR A B&B NOW. I READ EVERY ONE OF YOUR ENTRIES SINCE 2005 & THE COMMON DENOMINATOR WAS HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS TO MAKE A SIMPLE RES. WE HAVE CHAMPAIGN TASTES ON A BEER BUDGET SO PLEASE ADVISE US ON CURRENT INFO REGARDING CLEAN, & FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATIONS WITH HAMMOCKS, RESTAURANTS AND REMIND US OF ALL THERE IS TO SEE & DO IN OLD PROVIDENCE.
WELL, I HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND OP.
THANKS IN ADVANCE,
MARICHI

Marichi,

Thanks a lot for your post. I am still living here with my family. I don't plan to move anytime soon so hopefully we'll meet next year.

Currently, there are a lot of good places in which you can enjoy the Island in the "islander" way for good prices. Currently I have been talking to a good friend who owns a hotel here in Old Providence. I have also spoken to a bunch of islanders who have Native lodging which is pretty good and comfortable. It would all depend on what you want exactly.

This is a place for relaxing. Food is good and cheap. At Martin's Restaurant (called Caribbean Place) you can have a lot of fantastic dishes for an average price of 25,000. There are somethings that are only sold depending on the season like Crawfish, congs or crab. You will also get fantastic wines for great prices.

This is a great place for Scuba Diving and enjoying the World's third biggest coral reef. You can also do hiking with the guarantee that you will be in a peaceful place where the natives will treat you with a lot of respect.

I would like to know what you're interested in so that I may tell you more about the Islands.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Q'hubo Paul,

Thanks for your prompt response and for your enthusiasm about Providencia. Tell me, what are you doing to be able to live in paradise and how are your wife and your little one?

The hiking sounds perfect Paul. We want to discover Providencia's best. Of course we want to enjoy the ocean as much as we can. Paul do you know how long does it take to get certified as scuba divers at Felipe's? How much would it cost?
Jake and I are musicians. He plays an electronic wind instrument that digitally sounds like a sax or a flute, etc. I play guitar and sing latin american folk songs. So live music somewhere where we can watch the sunset would really be a combination of two of our favorite activities. Jake and I also enjoy architecture and history.
In terms of food we are a surf & turf couple. I will eat the fish & he will eat the beef but not vise/versa. Give me the fish, give him the meat & give us both veggies, patacones, sweet plantains, yucca, or arroz con coco any day.
Overall Paul, we truly have wanted to go to OP for many years and we will do everything possible to make our dream come true next year. We look forward to relaxing siestas and the warm waters of your little paradise.
Thanks in advance for your help, I really look forward to planning this escape. Talk to you very soon. Marichi
