Alaska backpacking

Postby nofraidnot » August 9th, 2007

anybody travel up through alaska? I just got an opportunity to go, where should I hit up? I've always assumed Alaska is mostly "undiscovered" but have any of you been to especially charming towns in alaska? Where? Was there a hostel?

I don't need to find places only with hostels, a campground or cheap hotel or b n b will do just fine.
Thanks!

What time of year will you be going? There is a well-defined "tourist season" in most of Alaska (mid June-early Sept). Other than that, most tours and attractions will not be open.

Homer, Seward, Denali National Park, Valdez, are all popular. Most of the easily accessible places in Alaska are quite "discovered". If you go off venturing into the wilderness (prop plane or boat needed), that's a different story.

As for "campgrounds", most of Alaska doesn't really have a lot of formal campgrounds. There are a lot of places where you can camp, but you'll be far from any sort of help, and you will need to know how to deal with grizzlies, environmental factors, etc. Make sure you know what you're doing before venturing into the Alaskan wilderness. The dangers are very real.

If you can explain a little more about what part of Alaska you'll be in and what you like to do (perhaps also do a BNA search for alaska and see the suggestions that have already come up), then we can help you better.

Alaska is almost half the size of the lower 48, so yes specs would be usefull. Everyone I have ever talked to said that Ketchikan was an amazing town. And it is the totem pole capitol of the world. Also check out the alaska state ferries. I have heard a lot of stories of people just ferry hopping all summer and sleeping out on deck and what have you.
