Amsterdam: budget hotel?

Postby wierdalyankovic » August 1st, 2008

I will be in Zurich in September for a business event for a week, after this I'd like to head to Amsterdam, where I plan to stay for a couple of weeks. My question for those with experience/locals:

1. Directions to get to Amsterdam from Zurich. Choice of road or rail?

2. When I get to Amsterdam, I would like to put up in an area near the coffee shops (420). Any recommendation of hotels and rates? food?

Cheers,
J.

You're in luck! There is an Amsterdam Coffee Shops FAQ as well as the Amsterdam Logue - the ultimate Amsterdam travel guide for you to peruse.

The Flying Pig Uptown as well as Flying Pig Downtown (which suit my budget - approx 20 Eur./night ) are both fully booked according to the Amsterdam Logue website search facility. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try the Stay-Ok by Vondelpark. I meet a lot of people that stay there and speak favorably.

Yeah, what nerokerr said... and if it's your first experience with 420 make sure you have someone who can drag your ass back to your hotel/hostel. Don't ask me how I know. Suspicious

Stayokay vondelpark is a great Party hostel.

Make sure and reserve for the entire time, preferably in the same room. Getting a place without reservation is a problem.

The other one, Doencastle, or something like that, is quieter and nicer. I stay there, but then, I'm not asking about the coffeeshops. I just want a quiet place to crash after a busy day sightseeing, or playing chess....

The one at vondelpark even has a snack bar/bar on the ground floor!!!

SOVP is good.
Free breakfast.
I had 250E stolen there the first night though.
Don't trust everybody.

Stay Ok has two other hostels in A'dam.
One near the RLD and the other in Timorplein.

I'll be staying at the ZEEBURG campground in a cabin myself.

Tot Zeins.

Oops.. the Stayokay Vondelpark is a hostel with shared rooms.

I am looking for a private room in a hotel which is clean, reliable, secure and budget. Any suggestions?
