Amsterdam Hostels

Postby anniebanannie » August 6th, 2009

I am heading to Amsterdam in less than 2 months, and am trying to figure out where to stay. I checked out the Logue, but am still curious...

Would like a hostel/hotel, relatively clean, where I can meet people but it not be dirty like the Kabul in Barcelona. Also...I am 32, so would rather not feel like an ancient person (like I did at the Kabul when I was 26).

I am currently considering:
Flying Pig Downtown
The Crown
Victorious Secret

Whaddya think?

I've never been to any of these, probably because they were full up.

I think Flying Pig might be okay for you. I understand the age limit for them is 35.

I tended to stay in the quieter hostels.

I liked this one quite a bit. It's social enough, but it doesn't bring in groups and so, its less noisy than most, less of a pure party hostel.

The Vondelpark is a very social hostel, more of a party center, and has its own small snack bar. When you go here, be sure to book up for the FULL time you intend to stay in Amsterdam, or you may find yourself moving every few days or being ejected.

Both are clean, both have good facilities.

I hear great things about the Bulldog as well, but it IS a bar hostel.

I once stayed in the hostel in Sandervoort, which is 15 minutes away from the center by bus. It was very cool, and relaxing, more of a 'real' holland town experience. Plus, they're right by a national park with sand dunes and lakes. Rent a bike to see the park. Its a very BIG place, and its very dark at night.

My brother stayed at the Flying Pig downtown and he said while it does have a bar - its not as such a party hostel but said it was a great place to chill out and relax and meet people. He said with regards to cleanliness he'd rate it about 85% and said they have no major complaints about how the staff kept it clean. Its location is perfect and i know its rated as one of the best in europe and also ive met and partied with you Annie you are no way gonna feel an ancient person lol!!!

I must have cut/pasted funny...Victorious Secret is not a hotel!

I meant to also ask about the Winston Amsterdam...

Or, if anyone has any other suggestions in the Central area, I'd love to hear 'em.

i would like to recommend st. christopher's inn...

it is in the red light district but found it very safe (you have to show your key card to be let into the room area)...it seemed relatively clean and not that expensive...has a bar with ok priced drinks (happy hour is 2 for 1!), but as you know red light district is expensive in itself...

this is the one at the winston...just make sure to book the hostel not the hotel...

also book in advance they said during the high seasons they are generally sold out...last year just after new years 15 of us stayed there for a reunion it was fun...

Most good hostels are sold out during the high seasons. It's essential to book in advance if you want a decent hostel in Amsterdam, and I mean a few weeks, not a few days. This goes for all year, for there never seems to be much of a low season for a city that has become one of Europes Party Central sites.

Thanks! The Winston looks really cool, and as long as I won't feel like an old lady there, I may try it:-) So many choices!

I am working on booking my accommodation now for the first few days, and won't be there until October. I used to love to show up and find a place, but unfortunately, that kind of travel can't happen much with the limited time I have.

i can't guarantee the age of the people staying there...i mean i think a place like amsterdam your going to get a lot of young kids going there (either ones who are studying abroad or just traveling on gap years), but I think you will be ok...

yea the days of showing up and finding a room might be gone in a place like amsterdam...as well as other well traveled spots...there are many hostels in amsterdam, but some are gross

I think anywhere there are going to be lots of younguns, and that's fine...I just don't want to stay somewhere like the Kabul where I literally woke up with someone humping my leg, had different roommates pretty much every morning when I woke up, had to push the shower button to get it to work, and it was just generally dirty. Too much party for me at this point.

Statsdoelen sounds like your cup of tea, then. Its not a party hostel, but there are plenty of young people to talk to, and its not particularly dirty.

Besides, their free breakfast is so generous you can make ones lunch with it.

I've stayed at the flying pig downtown and it was really great. Totally central, and a great atmosphere. While it's true that many who stay there are younger, there were definitely others in their 30s staying there who fit right in. However, the place does have a pot-smoking, party atmosphere. It depends what you want from your hostel.
