My wife and I will be landing in Amsterdam for a 2 weeks tour of Europe on May 8. I've looked through all the hotels in Amsterdam and I'm a little confused by all the choices and good/bad reviews. We are looking for a hotel close to most of the tourist sights but not in the middle of the "party scene". I enjoy a good time but I also enjoy a night of sleep. I'm surprised by the price of some of the hotels. Our budget isn't unlimited so I'd prefer not to stay in a hotel over $200 a night if thats even possible. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I can't recomend a hotel but the several times I backpacked there I stayed near vondel park. It's the "up town area", real close to the museums and a close walk/bike ride to everything else. Vondel park is the shit by the way, so nice and so many paths you can take/people watch the locals/tourists.

A sweet tip, book with travelocity by the 20th and use promo code hotel40 for $40 off 250+.(We had a prob when we went to book after it showed the discount and they gave us 50 off)

But our stay in hotel central park is $301 for 3 nights! Might not be a fancy hotel, def economy but we just plan on sleeping there... not hanging out in the hotel.

When it comes down to it I just feel at home around the park and it's quiet and safe

If I had an ideal location it would be by the park entrance(were staying near the end of the long Park...15/20 min walk) as a heads up

Not a hotel but last time we had a great time staying on this houseboat:

Great location; walking distance from all the sights, quiet at night and just a bit more fn than your traditional hotel or B&B.

I want to visit Amsterdam this fall or at the beginning of 2015 and the idea of a houseboat is extremely alluring for me. It also looks very nice and I think I will seriously take it into consideration. Thanks Lucky Luke.
