Amsterdam is fun. The Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum are must see if you're at all into art. Other than that it's a very walkable city and just fun to walk around and people-watch. The Jordaan neighborhood on the west side of town is nice to walk around. Not that many tourists walking around there (at least when I was there last December) so you get a nice feel of what it's like to live in Amsterdam.

If you are vegetarian or like vegetarian food head over to the Boelhoed restaurant at Prinsengracht 62, near the Jordaan neighborhood. Heck, even if you don't normally like veggies, head there. They make tasty food.

Don't smoke too much pot and don't try to snap photos of the girls in the red light district.

I assume you already have a hostel to stay in. If not, make a call and book one ahead of time. It can be hard to find a good one on short notice, and there are a lot of bad ones.

The lists have been given before. I like Statsdoelen Stayokay because its clean, near the center, and they're often less busy than other places. They also have a fabulous breakfast that comes with the price of the room.

Other people have their favorites. The Statsdoelen is not a partiers heaven, but then, I like quieter places. Vondelpark is a partiers heaven, and nice as well.

If you want to see an unusual part of holland, you are only one hour away from a sand dune national park.

Otherwise, have fun and hang out. Its a great city!!!!
If you love beer you can tour the Heineken factory.

Just an update, Amsterdam was a blast. I had a great time. Turns out you can have a good time in the Red Light District even if you're not a total pot head. (That's where I was staying) I took one of those (sort of cheesy) canal tours and walked around quite a bit. I only had one weekend so I'll have to go back again sometime soon. It's only a few hours train ride away from here.

One of the best things about Amsterdam for me is just wandering around and finding some really strange shops and things...or just hopping on a Tram and seeing where you end up...

The Canal Tours are great fun...I loved doing that...and going to visit a Diamond Factory...that was good as well although I obviously couldn't afford anything!! LoL
