Any Word When Tibet will Re-Open for Travel?

Figure out the best place to stay on Khao San Road in Bangkok and where to escape when you've had enough of the mayhem. From Singapore Slings to the changes in Bejing after the 2008 Olympics, gab about it all here.

Any Word When Tibet will Re-Open for Travel?

Postby Pelke » June 18th, 2008

Hi:

I'm planning a trip to Asia, arriving in October, and was hoping to start in Tibet then head on down to Nepal. However, from what I heard, China has closed travel to Tibet for now. Is there any word on when they will re-open for travel? Perhaps after the Olympics are over?

Thanks in advance for any insights you can lend.

In China right now and I've been hearing rumors that they are going to open it back up soon but I have no confirmation. I'm actually extremely curious about this as well. Wish I could be of more help but I should be finding out something pretty soon.

I think it is not going to be opened in near future as China is not sure what to do...but i think what ever they are doing is very bad.

The last I heard was mid June , or about now. It has been reopened to Chinese so maybe after the Olympic torch relay has passed (this saturday i think) they will make a decision.

Since were talking 'bout Tibet - how cold is it, really, in December / January? If it reopens, and if I go, it will be then.

I hear such conflicting stories - from it's bitterly cold and windy and gray to it's sunny and above freezing and a great time because there aren't many tourists.

It's cold, but bearably so, well I thought it was anyway.
I did however go to bed every night with a water bottle full of boiling hot water and thermals on.

The no tourist thing is a bonus and I remember a couple of days in Lhasa at least that were blue skied and sunny.

mmm hmmm. Cuz we all know how reliable that news source is...
Seriously though, don't believe half of what you read in mainland newspapers.

As of last week in Nepal, foreigners were only getting visas to go to Tibet if they were in a group of at least four. Solo travelers are still being nixed.

Wait til after the games, maybe they'll loosen their grip a bit.
