Anybody planning on going to Beijing for the Olympics?

Copy that. Let's just say it's an honor for the people. Gonna be interesting what a few thousand reporters on the loose might have to say?

Not for the hundreds of thousands of Beijing residents being tossed out of their homes before the Olympics.

I live in China. I wouldnt go near Beijing on a bet during the Olympics. Between price gouging with services such as taxis and the like and tightened security, it isnt gonna be pretty. If you get to Tiananmen Square, the best you will probably be able to do, is cross it to go the Forbidden City. The Chinese are very touchy when it comes to Tiananmen. Even during normal times, there is a huge military presence. Yes, there will be lots of press there, maybe you should go out to the China Daily website and others and read how much control is being put on the press. People are literally being kept out of city so there will be no demonstations. Good Luck to you that are adventurous enough to go......

I'm with PanyuCarole, I wouldn't go near Beijing if you paid me (unless it was a whole ton of money). There's very little I enjoyed about my trips to the city--they really treat tourists like garbage there, even if we speak Chinese. There are plenty of better cities to travel through in China.

Hello!
My friend and I will be traveling to the Games (August 8th-16th) and would like to meet other people who are going as well to hang out/have a drink with during our time in China. If anyone is from Chicago it would be nice to meet and see if we want to get together in Beijing. We are a couple from Chicago of 27 years and 22 years old. If anyone is interested let me know!

Ditto that China-matt.
I knew either Taiwan or Tibet would try one before the Olympics.
As has been said before there are few places where the Olympics could take place without someone having an issue -Greenland maybe so people should just get on with it and disassociate sport from politics. for me they can make their point during the relay as long as they dont stop the relay but once the games starts then let the athletes complete what they have trained for.

Chinamonty,
I posted that before anything started happening in the western mountains of China. Last year I was convinced I didn't want to be around for the Olympics. I'm not afraid of some protests and problems... I just don't like crowds and don't think Beijing is a friendly city.
