Taking an entire year off from school at a very important developmental age is not such a good thing, especially if it either leaves them missing out on some basic, yet vital, education or coming back and being behind everyone in their class. Being with your parents 24-7 when you are in the 1st or 2nd grade is likewise not a positive. They should have a healthy balance of time with you and time with their peers.
Sorry Allen Ambrosino, but you are just dead wrong and its clear you do not have children or have not read all the literature about what is best for children. In study after study after study, homeschooled children do better than public or private schooled children.Places like Stanford find them more mature and PREFER them over schooled children during admissions.
Theres actually nothing MORE important than for a young child to be connected to his/her parents and traveling together and homeschooling helps children and their attachment to their families which supports everybody. Its the kids who are in school all day ( and early care and after care which is common today plus summer long full day camp at school and endless classes and homework) and parents away working all day that are most in danger as they attach to their peers and get all of 7 minutes a day of teachers attention ( according to studies) and 19 minutes a day is the typical time parents spend with children per day if both parents work according to a Brit study.THATS the crisis in todays world.Families being together and exploring together has life long advantages.
"A Smithsonian Report on genius offered a three -part recipe for high achievement, consisting of 1) much time spent with warm, responsive parents and other adults, 2) very little time spent with peers, and 3) a great deal of free exploration under parental guidance. Study director Harold McCurdy concluded:
“the mass education of our public school system is, in its way, a vast experiment on reducing ... all three factors to a minimum; accordingly, it should tend to suppress the occurrence of genius.â€
