Try to spend at least part of your time in Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, up in the hills. And dont miss Kintamani for a spectacular view of Mt & Lake Batur.
Also, make a point of going to the Gili Islands off the west coast of Lombok, for beaches & snorkelling. Dress modestly away from the beach, as the locals are Muslims. Avoid spending any time in Bangsal, the departure point for the Gilis (Meno, Ayer, Trawangan). Locals expect payment for carrying your bags to the boat, or washing sand off your feet, with bottled water. The vehicular ferry from Padangbai on Bali to Lombok, takes about 4 to 4.5 hours.
Kuta Beach on Lombok is far superior to its namesake on Bali. We hired a 4wd to get there. Sengigi Beach is a laid back type of resort on Lombok.

Motobike rides around Kuta should only cost 10,000 rupiah max. 5,000 is a better price, but not more then 10,000.

I travelled solo around Bali in August 2010 and was shocked at how much accommodation cost me each night for poor quality places.
There are no hostels in Bali, so to help the solo traveller avoid many of the nightmare accommodation situations I find myself in, I decided to spend a day or 2 in each place I visited creating a list of the best value places to stay in Bali for backpackers
....it was painstaking but I hope it helps make your experience in Bali more enjoyable...and affordable!
The lists here are for Gili Trawangan and Nusa Lembongan, I will upload a list on the top99 for ubud shortly.
