What country, culture or historic period has the best architecture? Give examples.

I am a big fan of ancient styles, particularly Greek and Mesoamerican. The only downside is that so much is fallen down. I think my favourite would be medieval, particularly for the fortifications. As good examples I would cite medieval cities such as Rhodes, Avignon and Tallin.

Its probably a bit obvious but I love all the Gaudi architecture in Barcelona and have spent hours photographing it. I love all the curves and twisted sculptures

And because its so wacky and wonderful and off the wall.

After that I love the gargoyles in Prague

I like Paris' Haussmann, London's Georgian, and Venice's Rococo architecture.

I just lived in a Batak House (Sumatra) for over a week and if I ever build a house, it's going to be similar to that. All wood, beautifully ornamented with paintings and carvings and very homely. Doesn't get much better than this.

Okay, I'm with you, love the ancient so here is a short list of my fav's:

Ephesus, Turkey, The Library and coliseum are amazing
Piazza Armerina, Sicily. The most well preserved mosaic floor you will find anywhere
Agrigento, Sicily, Temple has recently been spruced up
Selinunte, Sicily, I love that you can still walk inside the many temples
Paestum, Italy, Still out in the middle of nowhere to give you an authentic feel of the time
Assisi, Italy (not really ruins, but still very interesting architecture) The Church is fantastic

I have to pick one?

I find 19th century Russian architecture pretty impressive. But then, I've also got a thing for early 20th century neo-classical. And the Persians built some pretty gorgeous stuff, too. And I've seen pictures of Yemeni buildings that look simply fantastic.

And that's just to name a few. In the end, aside from a few decades (mid-60s to mid-90s), most architecture has some appeal for me.
