boot question

Postby kay1234 » March 27th, 2009

Hi:

I'll be on kili in late June. I had planned to use my running shoes down low and my winter hiking boots (canvas, lighter than leather) for higher up. My winter boots are in the shop getting repaired now and I was out today at -10 Celsius with my summer hiking boots (also canvas) and a pair of very warm socks. My feet were toasty, which got me thinking about my question:

Are summer (non-insulated) boots with good socks enough for summit night? I realize it will be much colder, and that I will be moving much slower than today. Both my boots are good quality and waterproof. The winter ones are insulated and rated to -15 (Celsius) and plenty warm for hiking in the northeast. My feet are always too hot in my summer boots during the summer.

Thanks,

Kay

I think insulated boots are overkill. I've used waterproof "summer" hiking boots with neoprene socks on summit day. Others wore two pairs of smart wool socks. None of us had insulated boots.

There is another consideration: If you only plan to use your insulated boots on summit day, you'll have to pack them the other days. Your luggage is limited, and hiking boots, even canvas, are heavy.

We had almost no wind on our summit day, and I climbed in January, which would be warmer than June. Instead of insulated boots, you may want to consider bringing chemical foot and/or toe warmers - they are much lighter than a 2nd pair of boots. (I brought some, but didn't use them.)
