I'm hoping that someone can help me with my route. I have aprox 4 weeks. Leaving Cancun Mexico April 1 or 2nd overland via bus. Would like to make it to Antigua Guatemala for Semana Santa festivities. I am having a difficult time finding bus information.

Initially, I was planning to rent a place for the month and just do some day trips from Antigua (still might opt for this). I will be on the home end of a 2 month South America Trip and thought I would enjoy some down-time, however The more I read, the more I want to see/do.

Is Antigua a good place to day-trip from? I figure I can spend my last week on my way back to Cancun (flight out on May 8th from here), and see Tikal and Tulum.

Any suggestions are welcome.

As Good Friday falls on April 6, 2012, Semena Santa will be in full swing by the 1st so best change your plans to be in Antigua by then & book accommodation NOW.

There's lots to do in Guatemala so best to research a bit further before committing to a month in Antigua.

Yes- by all means book a reservation as soon as possible, since almos all lodging places will be filled by visiting families, including that really cheap hostel that USED to take backpackers until the family arrives.

A month is Antiqua is a bit excessive for the attention span of most people, since it tends to get tiring after a few weeks. Of course, if you want to socialise and learn Spanish at the same time, Antiqua is the place to be for a month.

but not to worry. Lago Atitlan and Panajachel can occupy you for a week at least if you explore the villages around the lake , go to the butterfly preserve(Never been there, but its said to be nice), and take a guided tour up a small volcano.

There is Copan to see on the way, and I enjoyed Todos Santos quite a bit. It takes about two days to get there, if you don't start from huehuetenango, and one day to come back.

Some people like Livingston and that area, but I'm not entirely fascinated by creole culture, especially one in an area that can be dangerous for tourists if they're not careful.

As others have noted, Antigua is booked full for Semana Santa, often months in advance. The other problem you're going to encounter is bus travel. Cancun has tens of thousands of workers who return to other parts of Mexico for the holiday, and it's very difficult finding open seats on buses. Buses in Mexico will not sell tickets if there are no seats. Overland travel in Belize and especially Guatemala will be very crowded and unpleasant over the holiday week too.

Hate to break it to you, but your trip sounsd like a disaster in the making.

Book a room now, fly into Guatemala City, there are always shuttle.s or taxis available to Antigua.

After Easter you'll be fine busing to Cancun.
