Figure out the best place to stay on Khao San Road in Bangkok and where to escape when you've had enough of the mayhem. From Singapore Slings to the changes in Bejing after the 2008 Olympics, gab about it all here.

I'll need to apply for a China visa while in Southeast Asia. My question is whether there is any particular advantage in applying in one place versus another (in particular, cities within Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos).

Also, I'd prefer to apply for a 2-month China visa instead of a 1-month one. Is there any difficulty in securing a 2-month visa as a US citizen? I had read that they were making it hard during the Olympics season, but now that that's over I'm hoping there's been a return to normalcy.

Thanks in advance,

Dustin

i'm also interested in this. China changed the rules to force you to get your Visa from your home country. So if you're already going around the world... you're pretty much screwed. I sent an email to the Visa office in Sydney, Vancouver, and Hong Kong... but have yet to receive a response. Anyone else get a visa lately from these places?

Edit:
I found this on the New York Consulate page:

I found this on the New York Consulate page:

Applicants who reside or travel away from the country of his or her nationality can apply for visas at a local Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

I am in the same boat and would have loved to get my work visa in Thailand for China. But I read that in April or May of this year they made it so you have to go back to your country instead of getting it in a 3rd country. A REAL BIG PAIN IN THE ASS!! I simply can not afford that! Really kind of sucky!

I'm seeing posts as recent as October stating the ability to get China visas in Hanoi. Are you sure you can't get china visas while in a foreign country? I couldn't find the specific link you mentioned on the New York consolate website.

The NYC consulate page kinda sucks. I can't find it back either now. I think it was under FAQ or something.

That would be GREAT if you could get your visa in another country (like Thailand)!!

We got our Visa in Hanoi via a travel agent in April/May this year. No problem getting it but we were only allowed a 30 day Visa. It starts from the date of issue. We are UK citizens.

They brought in new rules because of the Olympics and they haven´t officially dropped them yet.

That being said, i got an email from the Sydney embassy and they will process my visa application even though I´m canadian!
