I read somewhere that when you go to Tibet the Chinese visa in your passport will be cancelled? does anyone know any more about that? I know you need a special permit to go to Tibet but I was hoping to be able to go back into China on the same visa? It's a bit confusing. Any advice?

You heard correctly, if you have already gotten a Chinese visa it WILL be canceled & you will be given a new one valid for,if I remember correctly, 14 days, however they said it was no problem to get an extension once you arrived in China. At least that's the way it was when I did my Tibet trip in Oct/09.

Wasn't a problem for me as after seeing the way the Chinese occupation army treated the Tibetans & spending 4 days the in polluted, ripoff city of Beijing, I visited the Wall & caught a flight to the Philippines.

The tour through Tibet was awesome & I highly recommend it, just tear the page with the map of Taiwan out of your Lonely Planet China guide unless you want to "donate" it to the Chinese police.

thanks for that info . Yes I've heard they may take my Lonely Planet which I'm not that happy about but hey, I will almost have no need for it by the time I leave Tibet! So how was the Philippines?

I was really burned out when I arrived so didn't wander too far from the hotel in Manila but the 2+ weeks on Boracay was GREAT, fab beach where you could just chill or walk up to the party areas. Accommodation ranged from el cheapo hostels to expensive hotels, the souvenir sellers were pretty laid back & not a nuisance, if you're looking for a PADI course it would be a good place for it.

Obviously I saw very little of the Philippines & would definitely like to return & explore more. :woot:

Wow, I'd never heard about this... thanks for sharing the info.

Busman, can you recommend a company for the Tibet tour? I read that the tours often include onward flights... if possible, I'd like to head on to Beijing. Do you think a tour company could arrange for me to get a Chinese visa then?

I used Getaway http://www.trekking-in-nepal.com highly recommend them as they were very professional, did everything to make hassle free & memorable.

Before leaving home I had paid for the 8 day Nepal to Tibet overland tour (there are 3 or 4 others to choose from), I arrived in Kathmandu early Sunday morning, gave them a call from my guest house, they gave me directions to their office, which they opened for me.

I had been in contact with them about a Chitwan Park tour so when we met he took me to another company they use for the park where I booked a 3 day 2 night stay at the Chitawin Jungle Lodge + another guest house in the main area of Kathmandu for my return. Was a great trip.

On my return I called & they arranged for the Chinese visa, the trip they offer return by air from Lhasa to Kathmandu, but I arranged to go to Beijing by train instead.

Read the highlights of my trip on my blog http://blogs.bootsnall.com/busman7 see pics by going to blogroll clicking on picasa albums, any more questions, just ask.

You should be able to renew your visa within China after visiting Tibet. They just don't want you in Tibet for more than 2 weeks or they get suspicious as to what you are doing there. They normally let you renew your visa twice within China, for 30 days each on top of the visa you entered the country with.
