Embarked on my GAP year after working for the same outfit for 38 years edit: due to irresponsibility on my part it has been extended until further notice.

Ate Indian food in an Indian Restaurant
Ate Thai food in a Thai Restaurant with a pretty girl
Went to a "straight friendly bar". They weren't all that friendly, but that was okay.
Traveled to four new countries
Stayed in hostels in three different continents. Am I a real backpacker now?
Met too many great people to mention through BnA and hopefully at least a few more before the year is out. Yeah Amsterdam!!!
Slept on the floor with five or six relative strangers. they aren't anymore
Learned to drink Aftershock, after midnight
Was amazed by how so many different types of people can become so close in a short time and overlook if not embrace those differences.
Went to a bunch of meetups. Look forward to even more.
Wish everyone Love and Happiness (you know what I am talking about Smile )

I've been writing lists like these for the past few years, since I started keeping a journal for every day life. It's fun to think back and remember how much can happen in a year.

- visited Belize (my first Caribbean island experience)
- rappelled into a 300ft sinkhole in jungle
- first serious caving trip (3hrs, sacrificial remains)
- visited Tikal in Guatemala (attempted to watch sunrise from atop Temple IV, despite zero visibility)
- began working on my website again after 5 years (see below)
- two trips to NYC
- TV interview for local news (re: upcoming RTW trip)
- went to season high 4 DC United soccer games, tailgating at 2

2006 was a good year. Some firsts were:
- paid for a visa - several (never been to any countries that required visas before)
- quit a job to go on a longish trip (5 months)
- first trip outside the comfortable confines of North America and Europe...visiting nine countries for the first time.
- slept under the stars in the desert
- entered a pyramid
- ridden a camel
- went to a nude beach
- took a stranger up on an offer to come home to lunch
- visited a hospital in a foreign country
- moved into my own apartment
- found a permanent job I can actually enjoy

Well,

I went to North Korea, a hospital in the US, missed 16 flights, learnt to drive in the US, went to 26 countries in 15 days for work, had a world famous author stay in my house, jogged in 32 countries and fell in love...

After traveling all of 2005, this year was a quiet one for me. But...

- I traveled across country to attend the Boots Holiday Party, made some friends, and probably found my next home town.
- I was named co-Person of the Year by Time Magazine. I'm still in a state of shock and still celebrating!

- trained and earned a type-rating in a Learjet for my new job. Visited over 150 cities in many states this year, ten new. Was an outstanding way to see the country. Met up with Booties in NYC, Cleveland, Greensboro, Denver, & Scottsdale.
- Also bought a house and am renovating it.
- Hung out in New York and got really drunk with lots of Booties, got snowed in for 2 extra days with a record-breaking blizzard. Saved Sunday with my very snowy booze run at 11am. Drank champagne and Jaeger with Booties while traipsing through Central Park Sunday evening.
- met a fantastic bunch of booties in Chicago at the June meetup.
- also learned to drink Aftershock, after midnight.
- met, drank, and partied with even more booties in Portland at the July graduation party.
- fourth large meetup was the BNA Holiday Party in Portland, also a most amazing time.
- in June, visited my old home of Leiden Netherlands and saw many old friends. Went boating on the canals and drank far too much wine.
- visited Budapest, Hungary and spent a day in the thermal baths - divine.
- visited Krakow Poland and the Salt Mines. Stayed up with a party at the hostel til well past sunrise.
- went to Jani Ligo in Latvia, an incredible summer festival. drank lots of vodka, ran and jumped over a bonfire, and hiked an untold number of miles to a castle far, far away. Learned my name means something rather dirty in Latvian.
- watched many World Cup games at outdoor cafes in Hungary, Poland, and Latvia.
- visited South Africa and saw a diverity of wildlife, including giraffe, hippos, impala, and vervet monkeys. Visited Durban, St Lucia, the beaches of Cape Vidal, drove the entire Cape Peninsula, saw the penguins at Boulders Bay, visited an ostrich farm, and saw the Cape Point lighthouse. Went wine touring in and around Stellenbosch. Flew the Hibiscus Coast in a Cessna. went to a proper South African braai.
- met a girl from New Zealand at the SFO airport who was traveling to Dallas on her RTW trip. Hosted her for five days at my house, visited the ranch from the Dallas TV show, something I would never have seen otherwise. Still get emails from her drunken adventures through Europe and beyond.
- got hired by a major commercial airline, start training Jan 3rd.
