We are just coming to the end of our two week stay in Dominica part of a 3 month trip.
Our first week we stayed in Scots Head in the south of the island a very friendly small town but with few facilities but the apartment owners were great and we could recommend them for a place to stay at low cost. It's a beautiful part of the island with a hiking trail from were we were staying which was great. The snorkeling is not as good here as in Champagne but that's only a short bus ride at little cost definitely recommend.
The main reason I am writing this is to warn people about the Calibishie area, crime here is high especially from the beach, we visited Hodges Beach which is a short ride away an isolated beach hardly anyone around, some bastard sole my custom made prescription snorkeling mask and snorkel plus our bus fare and a safari hat. The snorkel is no good to anyone but me and I was so upset as we still have 5 weeks left of our Caribbean trip so it as ruined it for me unless I can buy another mask on the next island which is St Lucia. We reported this to the police and had to travel all the way to Roseau the capital to get it a 3 hr round trip.
There was a serious crime last week of a French couple and the daughter being raped on another of the beaches. The police told us they have at least 3 thefts a day.
It's a very small village but the rest of the people are lovely and it's such a shame as they need the tourist money badly.

Crime in Calibishie Dominica

I'm so sorry to hear that your snorkel mask was stolen...I hope you were able to find a suitable replacement. I think that most travelers should exercise some level of caution when traveling to different countries, especially poorer nations. Tourists generally bring lots of money and items along with them. While I think most people are trustworthy, there are some unsavory individuals out there. I've been to Dominica on tours from cruise ships before and felt totally safe...but it is easy enough to have things stolen, so you should exercise some caution!

Possibly you should do some research on a poster before offering advise in such a derogatory manner "so you should exercise some caution!"
Jeanie99 has done her share of 'real travel' not just 'tours from cruise ships' where you're supplied with babysitters. She was warning others about the high incidence of thefts.

I wasn't being derogatory at all! I'm sure that Jeanie99 has done lots of travel, probably more than me!

So? I would exercise caution when I was at a beach at home, too! That's just me...you can do whatever you want!
