Hello. I am currently on a RTW trip. I'm in Tokyo for another 5 days, and then I fly to Dehli, India to travel through India for 4 or 5 weeks. I've never tried scuba diving before and would like to do so on this trip, but didn't plan ahead very well for this before we left the US 6 months ago. My husband and I were thinking about getting our scuba certification on the Andaman Islands if we can. Looking through the PADI certification, it looks like I need a dive medical certification before I can dive, because I cannot answer no to all of the questions on the medical questionnaire PADI makes you fill out before diving. (I have migraines, for which I take medication).

I have no idea where to start for getting a dive medical. Obviously, I can't go to my doctor at home, so what sort of doctor do I need to go to? Has anyone gotten a dive medical on the road? Anyone know of an English-speaking doctor I could visit in Tokyo or in India? (Our itinerary in India is not yet set, so I'd take any suggestions). Any suggestions for getting a dive medical are appreciated!

Ask the dive shop you're planning to dive with, they should be able to recommend a local doctor familiar with dive medicine.

I can't speak specifically about scuba diving. However, almost any doctor you go to in urban India and Tokyo will have at least a passable command of English. More than likely, their English will be very good.

For example, if you are headed to the Andamans, and are heading out from Chennai ... There are some very big hospitals in the city where you could ask about dive-specific certification and where all the staff speak very good English.

WikiTravel has a good list of medical centers:

Among them, I know that Apollo hospital is a very large, modern hospital. It's probably a good starting point.

You should be able to find similar hospitals in Kolkata too, if that's your route to the Andamans.
