I don't really speak Esperanto, but I have studied it a bit on and off and can more or less read it. Even though it is a constructed language, it is not rigid at all but surprisingly flexible and there is literature and poetry in Esperanto.
The best resource to learn Esperanto for free on the Internet is http://www.lernu.net.
One aspect of Esperanto that is interesting for travelers is http://www.pasportaservo.org. It's an international directory of Esperanto speakers that are willing to host other Esperanto speaker for free.
