Anytime I actually get charged $5 for going over my limit on savings transfers or even get fees for going over my balance, I call them up immediately and request that it be waived.
I have never been charged a dime extra for any accounts with BOA. Try calling them when stuff like that happens, they are usually more than happy to waive stuff to make sure you are happy. Thing is people never ask.
I once got $160 worth of overdraft charges waived that was solely my fault, just by calling customer service and asking.
Dodging the currency conversion fee

The one and only good thing I will say about BOA is that they will waive just about any fee if you complain about it. I just don't feel like we should have to complain...quote:Originally posted by Joey:

I understand that. I guess I just haven't experienced a bank outside of them so I don't know what it is like NOT to have fees. And it looks like now I have no reason to switch again.

i mean i suppose but if you go away and take out money 30 times at 5 dollars a pop a bank is not always so keen on waiving that fee, i mean you can always call up and complain and try to get them to waive it, but i also guess it depends on where you are in the country...my bank in NY was not so keen on that

Anyone have any experience using Washington Mutual while traveling abroad? My wife talked to someone else who is currently doing a Round the World, and she wasn't really having any major fees applied, but thought I'd get a second opinion.

All my research had pointed me to HSBC being the best option for the banking side. Unfortunately after I opened the account, I learned they have no ATMs in Switzerland or Italy, so now I'm nervous about getting hit with the other bank's fees. HSBC charges $1.50 per withdrawal, bud does anyone know how much most banks will charge for using their ATM if you don't bank with them?
Your post is dated April 27th so maybe things have changed since then...

I bank with Wachovia in the US and have to say I was pleasantly suprised with their rates. They actually gave me better conversion rates than my credit cards or when I converted money in country. They also give you 2 free ATM withdrawals a month and then charged $2 after that. I would try to limit my withdrawals to once a week so I would be charged minimally on my withdrawals. Half way through the trip it looked like they were charging me an extra fee but after research it was being charged the whole time (1% visa fee) but they were now itemizing the fee on a separate line.
