Done, and I now have all three options of the download software on my iPod, for an easy install, and with any luck the mac version should be able to run straight off the iPod (has done in tests so far) so there will be no need for installing software on the move.

Getting a Pro account anyway, for £26 odd for two years it's worth it.

Hello I am a newbee in bootsnall

But this is how I solve my download problem.
Evaluating the mobile storage equipment for along time I considered their cost to benefit function. I finally decide that spending 500 to 650 USD to a quality device is unneccesseraly expansive. Instead I found a cheap 12.1 inch notebook which can perform many important tasks at the same time. First it was compact enough to carry in a backback without to much attention and light enought to carry. It also give me great chance of seeing and modifying what I shoot instantly as well as storing them. Finally using a nokia 6600 mobile phones GPRS modem function I could sent the pictures to where ever there is mobile coverage. ( for this function you must consider buying a local GSM card which has granted for gprs connection). Final option is for the people who plan to stay more then 15 days in a country other wise it's unnecessary task because sometimes its hard to arrage conneceting because some GSM operators require special patchs). if you stay for shorter periods it is not neccesary

This is how I solve the download problem as a matter of fact I am wiring from this 6600 connection at the moment

Best regards

just to let you know, i have just signed up to Yahoo who offer free unlimited storage for your photos, you can create different albums and email them to friends and family or you can just give them your link and they can go and view all your photos whenever they feel like it, i'm traveling for 9 months and i think it work pretty well as you can put as many photos as you like on there, and also it's free which is a bonus

Just another thought, there are a bunch of other free sites you can upload to that work out really well, they also have fun editing tools on them that get rid of red-eye and such. O-foto, kodak gallery, snapfish, and shutterfly have all worked well for me and are totally free. They're also super cheap to order prints from as well.

Monkey,

Do you use the Belkin media reader? I'm looking at the 60GB iPod with media reader. Keeping it in my pants at all times and pray that it doesn't get stolen.

What software are you talking about? Doesn't the ipod 60gb just show as a detachable storage device? or do i need bloody itunes?

thanks Smile

How long does Kodak allow storage of photo albums? Worried that after a time the albums will get deleted off. I plan to travel for 8 months & want to use this as a place to store & share my photos. Is this the best way do you think? Don't really want to be burning loads of cds!

Dani, I was wondering when someone was going to mention Yahoo to store and share photos ... I don't understand why one would pay to do so ... Is Yahoo's service the same as the other sites?

on the yahoo thing: i started uploading my photos into the yahoo albums over three years ago and theyre still up, but theyve changed a few of the features. now, you can only see the photos in one reduced size of your original. and the quality is quite poor compared to shutterfly and flickr. i'd start using the other sites, but ive invested so much time and energy uploading my photos onto yahoo that now im stuck with it for a while...until i find a way to get those hundreds of photos onto another sight. *sigh*
yes, its free, but the quality isnt great. this has been my experience with the yahoo albums.

regarding the flickr site and about uploading the photos: can uploading be done from ANY camera with a usb cable (i think this is the right cable, no?)? all these cables and the lingo are confusing for a non-tekkie like me. thanks! great thread, by the way!

Check out Thorntree under camera equip etc. thread. Lan's comments cover digital storage issues in detail. Great info and he tells you why uploading on the road isn't practical from most slow speed internet cafes as it might take hours.

Please don't send people to the Thorntree.
We all came from there and don't want to go back.

Maybe the camera companies could come up with a unique travel camera. The camera should be able to connect with flickr (<3 flickr so I didn't choose any other example Smile ) and upload remotely via GPRS. Travellers don't have to sit by a computer and watch the slow uploading process - just let the camera run during the night, while it's charging - no battery loss. And there has to be an auto-switch-off-once-uploaded feature too! HeHe

So does it come down to these choices?

(I don't understand technology, I just bought a digital camera and got comfortable with the SD card idea)...

I can a) buy tons of memory on SD cards, b) try to find internet cafes and connect my camera to a computer and upload to one of various sites (flickr, Kodak, etc) with a cable connection = slow, c) try to find internet cafes that allow you to burn CDs = unlikely, d) use a cell phone somehow??? or e) carry along a laptop and upload to that independent of internet cafes, but I would need to protect it and charge it.

Did I get the basic situation summarized? (I will be in central america, south america, eventually india, south africa, places like that...)

Could someone explain the GPRS option a little more for me? I understand that you do it with a cell phone... Do you do that with or without your own laptop, with or without internet cafes? Is it independent of computers completely? Also, this will work where I live and my cell phone works, but even if you have a cell phone that isn't working as a cell phone, could you carry it along to serve this function? It seems like it would have to be connected to its network, right? So that is very limited in terms of traveling, right, like limited to one country usually?

Thanks,
Ann-Marie (nor I understand the meaning behind "thorn tree refugee... what about the other karmic categories???) Smile
