Thinking about going to Romania in late March or early April of this year. I've read that renting a car is not a smart idea. Is train/bus travel easy for tourists?

Can anyone comment on renting a car/road conditions? One thought is taking a train/bus to a mid size town and renting it there vs renting it when leaving Bucharest to explore.

G'day
I live in Romania and I have a driver's license. However, since I live in a town with good transportation, it's not necessary to drive.

Unfortunately, the public transportation within the country is NOT as good so there are a lot of places where you CANNOT go without a car. Such as: Sarmisegetusa Regia or mountain resorts.
If your plan is to go from one big city to another then sure, the train is a great (something slow) option. Buses exist as well (I have motion sickness so I cannot use them). Buying train / bus tickets is easy and many many people speak English and will help you.

Renting a car in Romania is a great idea (and a cheap affair) if you want to venture to off the beaten path area.

The roads very from new highways (unfortunately not very many of them) to European roads (which are in good condition), national roads and totally wracked county roads. You'd want to stick to highways (marked A) and Europeans (marked E) and maybe some national ones (marked DN).

Let me know what you want to do here and I'll be able to give you more info.

I used Kemwel, and actually rented from Sixt when in Croatia - we had absolutely no issue. Yes, there was a deposit using the credit card, but we got it back without even asking. Kemwel or Autoeurope---they will match and are responsible.
