On January 8, 2009, there was a 6.2 earthquake in Costa Rica with it's epicenter close to the La Paz waterfall near La Paz volcano. There was strong shaking in the central valley and most people (my wife included) were pretty scared although there was little damage there. The area near the epicenter didn't fare as well; structures collapsed in towns from Fraijanes to Varablanca to Cinchona, several people were killed and several are still missing. The scenic road that has been used as an alternate route to Sarapiqui (Varablanca to San Miguel) was mostly destroyed as it ran right on top of the fault. Nor will this road be rebuilt as the topography has literally changed in this area. Cinchona, the site of a few friendly roadside restaurants with amazing hummingbird feeders was entirely destroyed and will be abandoned and the Peace Lodge at the La Paz waterfall gardens collapsed. Poas volcano has also become a bit more active.
Hotels anywhere in this area could be closed for some time if not abandoned.
