Egypt Air?

Postby Tickles » August 10th, 2007

Has anyone flown Egypt Air?

My guidebook pretty much says not to use it. But the most direct flights from NYC - Cairo are on Egypt Air.

Any good or bad experiences?

I haven't flown with them, but the only thing I really care about in an airline is its safety record, and Egyptair is a little lacking in that regard.

According to Airsafe, which keeps tabs on how many fatal incidents and how many flights an airline has flown since 1970...Egyptair has had 7 fatal incidents - the same number as Delta, which flies more than 30 times more flights. Admittedly, 7 out of some 750,000 flights isn't a lot, this is still not a very good record by airline standards.

Of course, what these sorts of numbers don't tell is that airlines from developing countries usually fare much better on international routes, since they have to meet the standards of the countries they're flying to. Still, if it's only in directness that Egyptair is holding the edge, not a huge price advantage, I'd probably look for a routing through Europe instead.

Thanks so much for the info. It's not the cost I'm concerned about, its that I'd literally have a 7 hour LONGER journey if I went thru Europe....

Argh.......tough decision.

Well, I guess it's all about what your comfortable with. I'm sure Egyptair would get you there fine, it probably just wouldn't be world's best flight.

I'm not sure when you're going, but I checked some random dates, and on those days, anyway, Alitalia had some connections that only added a couple hours each way.

I wouldn't do Alitalia to Cairo, I've used it and there are always major delays on the flight to Cairo from Rome/Milan.

KLM always has very long times between connections, Air France is okay as long as you don't have to switch airports. I liked British Airways from NY - Cairo.

But last time I flew into Cairo from the states was years ago, so things may be different from my experience.

Thanks for the info. I ended up booking my flight thru Royal Jordanian, which was crazily $250 cheaper than any other flight I could find, and the flying time wasn't that bad. Only thing that sucks is a really long layover in the middle of the night in Amman when I leave.

I flew them inter-country and they were great! The plane was brand new and the service was good. The food was plentiful as well. I REALLY should have flown them from New York versus Alitalia. The Alitalia flight to Egypt was the absolute worst flight I had ever been on. I was in air hell.

Egypt Air is fine. While I prefer to fly other airlines, living in Egypt, I end up using them a lot. They are not the most comfortable, the food is not the best, but the price is usually right.

Hey, just wanted to add that now my trip is over, I see Egypt Air is fine. I don't know why I was paranoid. Smile
