European work options for Aussies

Postby Brentus83 » June 21st, 2009

Hey guys, I'm an aussie citizen and thinking about leaving my mundane job in Sydney in mid-2010 to look for work in Europe. I'm hoping to go for between 12-24 months and am really just in search of an adventure and seeing where the universe takes me :D . I'm hoping people can throw ideas at me in terms of possible locations to base myself and potential employment opportunities to get me thinking of options.. Here is my predicament:

* I don't care where I base myself in Europe - but it can't be the UK as I've already used my once-off working holiday visa in 2004. I'd love to live in Spain or Italy though :)
* I'll be taking roughly aus$10,000 with me (= $8,000 US), (= 5000 GBP), so really need to start earning quickly.
* I have a degree in Environmental and Urban Planning with 3 years professional work experience. (however I'm willing to undertake any sort of paying job).
* I only speak the english language.
* I don't have any sort of dual-nationality/citizenship options.

So... what would you do?

I'd imagine finding work in a professional capacity (such as urban planning) would be difficult in a non-english speaking country if english is your only language? Yes/no?

Does anyone know of any professional online job agencies (such as UK Workgateways) which specialises in recruiting urban/town planners/built environment/environmental protection etc..

What other work options are there?

Any ideas or tips of any kind at all much appreciated! :D

Here's a handy list of WHV's available for us Aussies (if you're under 30). There's a few countries in Europe you can still tap.

I very nearly did one in Ireland before starting BootsnAll. Malta might be interesting but also a little isolated. Any of the Scandinavian countries would be cool too. Germany'/Italy/France probably your best bet to be mobile throughout the rest of Europe.

As to what work you'd be able to get once you got a visa, I'm not sure. You could look into internships with companies in your field of expertise.
