I'm considering taking up a contract to work in Dubai. I like the thought of working with a mixed culture of people from all over the world and joining value job experience! I've had friends do it with mixture feelings... what was your experience and would you recommend it?

I have not worked in Dubai but I've come across a handful of English teachers who have. I don't know if you'd be teaching, but one blog I follow is by cairogal who worked in ... of course ... Cairo once, but also the UAE (maybe another city though?).
There is a good list of blogs in the sidebar and a quick look now told me that at least one has Dubai in the title. Hope this helps. Make cay, not war - Kesmen |

Lost in Place |
My Dad used to work in Dubai about 10 years ago so I got to live there for only a couple of years. It's a nice place, quite liberal compared to Saudi Arabia (where my dad used to work as well). They have nice beaches, decent malls, and they also have churches for worship if you are into that sort of thing. There are lots of expats and come to think of it, it is the only place in the world that I've been to where there are more expats than locals (well, except maybe Dhahran, Saudi Arabia).

I haven’t worked in Dubai, but I worked and lived in Qatar for several years. Qatar, Bahrain and Dubai are probably the most liberal places in the Middle East (from a western perspective).
Pretty much every person that has worked in the Middle East has a different opinion so take what people say with a grain of salt. Personally I really liked living in Qatar – but I did have some complaints, but hay! no where is perfect. Overall I would say it was one of the most fun times of my life. But… I know some people that hated living in the Middle East and counted down the days until their contract ended. Personally I think that a positive attitude and an open mind will determine how much you enjoy and learn form your experience Did you ever take the job?
