So I have been told that you need a degree to be able to teach in Thailand, but that in the southern part of the country schools will often take a TESOL Cert in place of a degree.

My question is how hard or 'legal' will it be to get a Thai Work Permit (after getting my non-immigrant visa)? I shouldn't have any problem getting a job, and I will apply for the visa and permit while I am still in China.

Thanks in advance!
John

Probably not. BUT - some employers can, sometimes, arrange these things. A friend without a degree was hired at a hotel - as a teacher - and the hotel hired him as a human resources staff. Larger employers will know how to get around such things. She has something to offer though: experience in the industry.

The real problem will be finding an employer that will hire you - with the paperwork problem - versus hiring someone who has the degree and no paperwork problem.

Thank you! That's all good stuff to know. A guy that I talk to from TEFL International is confident that he would be able to find me a position in Southern Thailand (he says that in the rural/countryside areas the schools will sometimes take a TESOL Cert in place of a degree). Is this true? Do you think it's a good idea for me to try and find a job in Thailand a month or so before my program is up in China?

Also, what are some good countries for TESOL Cert holders that DONT have a degree to work in 'legally'?

Thank You So Much! Smile
John

It won't be hard to find a job - period.

Finding a job where you are working legally is what the issue is - that is what you should clarify with the TEFL Int'l person. You can find plenty of work pretty much everywhere and anywhere - if you don't mind working illegally.

You will pretty much need to be here to land a job. Only the very worst jobs hire from overseas - as they can't find anyone here to take the job.

Even China is looking for a degree in most areas these days - again, better luck in the rural areas. Indonesia - no degree required - at the moment.
