There are a few decent looking volunteering opportunities on Helpx.net in South East Asia which we would really like to take part in.

Most fall into either teaching (English or computers), or manual work.

Both we are ok with, but it would seem to make sense to teach as that is adding additionality, rather than taking away from what someone local could potentially do - though we don't mind either.

I was just wondering if anyone had done this before - most seem to be a homestay - what was that like?

I wonder how they would cope that two of us (men) would want to volunteer. I wonder if it would be best to say we want to volunteer together but not mention the partner part.

It seems very exciting, but in that scary kind of a way.
