Hi everybody,

A am going backpacking round Europe this year and my friend just told me that it is possible to work on archaeological digs for free. I wondered if anybody had done this and/or could point me to a website where I could find more information.

I tried Google to see if I could find any organisations specific to backpackers that did this but had no luck.

Many thanks for any help Smile

I'm fascinated by this but would be more interested in Middle Eastern places...particularly Jordan, Egypt, Israel and Libya...

The volunteer section of Transitions Abroad may have something on it - a name you could google to get to other - I didn't read through all of these.

I want to say that the book Work Your Way Around the World had info on it, but maybe it was the volunteer version of that book? I wouldn't buy either book just for that but if you find one at a bookstore check it out.

Have a look through some of the threads in the living abroad forum as well. This forum is a little busier but if nothing comes up in the next few days I'll move this thread over there for you.

Go to www.usversustheworld.com and email brooke.

She's done this before (but paid for it) and she might know of some other resources.

Hey all thanks for the great responses. I did a bit more digging (ho-hum) and found this:

Some are paid for and some are free so I will see what I can come up with. Hopefully it will be useful for others Smile

Hey Claire,

I did a dig in Menorca, spain last October, and am planning on another in Georgia in August. Both require payment... I actually have not found many that are free... you need to contribute to the cost of running the dig, and pay for room and board during your stay. However, its totally worth it!!! A lot of people use it to get credit for school (people actually pursuing a degree in the area). It's a great way to meet and get to know new people and learn a lot about the history of the place.

Here's another link to find worldwide digs:
