Ok i'm a 23 yr old male. Im Irish (and living here) I don't have a degree so i can't do a TEFL course here but i really want to get away. ASAP.
Was just wondering what my options are.. I'm at a crossroads here. I was thinking of a RTW trip but that will only sort me out for 12 months and i need at least 2 years. I really wanna go away and set up a new life (even if it's temporary) I know i could go to Europe but i'd like to go further afield than that.. Would love to work in america (but that's out of the question) next would be SE asia.. but as i can;t teach it would have to be illegal? I've heard of some people doing this but would you have to get there to find out? Can someone just pack up and move to lets say....Bali? get a job working in a shop under the table.? Would i have to leave the country every 90 days? I play guitar and sing too.. I have been playing in bands for 6 years.. I have gigged on my own here in Ireland and would love to be able to do the one man band thing abroad just playing pubs.. would this be a feasible idea? playing contemporary songs in SE asia?? Or would it need to be an english speaking country? Could i just jump on a plane next week and see where the road takes me?? I would consider anything.. Can any body help? |

The grass is always greener. Many people I know would kill for the right to work in the EU but I guess it's not as exciting when you are a part of it.
I'm sure Irish people can get working holiday visas to countries besides OZ (NZ, Canada & Japan). Google it and see. Working under the table jobs usually pay badly so you'd need some funds to back you up. I personally wouldn't set a foot wrong in Bali. Some countries might let you do the TEFL without a first degree and you could get a job in many countries regardless, though it's not as easy. I know a few people without a degree who are working in China. |

Don't get me wrong i know many people would love to work in Europe (and we do have it good) it's just i can do that any time where-as student and youth travel can stop as low as 27 in some travel agents here so i'd prefer to do my world travels first ya know.. Plus I've been many places in Europe already.. although i do plan to go back and work in Barcelona at some stage (beautiful/crazy city)
You wounldn't set a foot wrong in Bali? what exactly do you mean? strict country? I have tried to check out working under-the-table jobs online but it seems to actually get the job, your best bet is to just turn up.. What are your friends working as in China? China has always appealed to me.. Anyway thanks a million for the reply,, |

You can TEFL in China without a degree. I know that recently a few large cities made it mandatory for teachers to have a BS or BA, but from what I have read if you are a white person whose native language is English then it is quite easy to get a job as a TEFL instructor. Check out Dave's ESL Cafe, people there can tell you everything about TEFL.

"...but from what I have read if you are a white person whose native language is English then it is quite easy to get a job as a TEFL instructor."
How unfortunate that you have to be white and that speaking English as a first language (and having a degree) isn't good enough. |

just wondering if you are still planning to go to Bali? I am asking because I am looking for a short term english conversation teacher (possibly 1-2 months) for my students. My Indonesian teachers are great and they speak english very well. But, I feel that they will get a new experience of having someone completely from different background that can share with them his/her culture.
The problem is the school is in Jakarta and you want to go to Bali (1.5 hours of flying). So, I thought you could maybe spend a couple of months here and after that you can spend time in Bali (I will contact some people that could help you there)to see if you really want to live here longer. I have friends who own bars around Jakarta and maybe you could do part time in the evening doing your own gigs. Just let me know where you stand at this point. |

Flynn, if the job offer in Jakarta is kosher (I'd check it out big time) I would go for it in a heart beat. My favourite country yet is Java, and so beautiful. Bali is fab too but if you're worried about meeting people you know then you may just meet them in Bali, the world and his wife go through there on RTW trips.
p.s I'm Irish too and know what you mean, yeah it's a lovely place but there's so much of the rest of the world to see, and after all, you'll always have Ireland! Linda Eco Travel Guide - Discover a new way of travelling |

You don't need a degree to get your TEFL certification. Then there are plenty of jobs in Indonesia, rural China and Central and South America for people without degrees.
