I have been very tempted to call in sick on some Friday so I can go on a weekend trip. However, I'm not very good at thinking of excuses...
Granted, I am a teacher, and get plenty of days off over the year, but sometimes you need a break when it's not in the calendar...so

What is the best excuse you've used for skipping work to do something more fun?

Ah, skipping work. The trick is to make up an excuse they can't track down. If you say your car broke down, they could ask for a tow truck receipt. Doctor appt? That can be confirmed.

My dad's a college professor and he's heard every excuse there is. He once had a student say they had to miss the final exam for an out-of-town funeral. My dad expressed condolences and told them to be sure they came back with the funeral program. They never came back...

Just go with food poisoning. They won't ask too many questions about your explosive diarrhea. Just give them TMI and that'll shut them up real quick.

I called in sick to go to the beach once, and another time to look at grad school. I've used asthma attack, but the diarrhea excuse is THE BEST! I used it my last week before quitting to travel and no one questioned it. Who would make that up?

Luckily, I get a bunch of personal days so I don't have to do that. I think I may use one next week to watch my friend run up the steps in the Empire State Building.

I usually just say I'm not feeling well. I totally agree that sometimes yo uneed a day off, but for teachers, it's a little different...the school will then have to pay to get a sub, right? I guess that would cause me pause, and I would probably wait until winter/spring/summer break or the three day weekend/teacher's day, etc. Kind of throws kids in a tizzy to have a sub, too.

My running partner is also a teacher, and we were talking about our upcoming marathon in Eugene, OR, in April. She is calling in sick a Friday and a Monday...a bit suspicious, I know! Luckily, I have personal days I can use....(She used her personal days (she only gets two) already!)

Personally I just say I'm not feeling well when I need to call in. My mom on the other hand takes a day off whenever I need to go to the airport. One time she called in with a yeast infection. Of course it was a man she was calling and he got all freaked out and it was perfectly fine.

Food poisoning is the best, it's short lived, you can get it from pretty much everything and you don't have to fake a sore throat or even sound that rough like you do if you claim to have a cold.

I used this last time I needed a day off, I just told them it was coming out both ends - they didn't ask for any more details.

I think I said I'd re-heated some chicken, a stupid thing to do, but I didn't realise it was so bad.

Have fun.

This is not so related but listen to this cool tip I learned from a 50 year old Bosnian business man: eat a raw potato and you get a fever.

So manipulative, I know, to go to all the trouble of eating a raw potato just to give yourself a fever...but food for though, hehe.

I don't have a problem with calling in sick from time to time...but I find it hard to make something up. (but I haven't used the potato trick yet!)

Being a teacher myself, a day off here and there is needed (although we are blessed with great vacation time!). If it is only one day, I won't give an excuse..."i'm sick and won't be coming in today" will usually suffice. I also hate lying so the less I say, the better.

if you don't make it a habit, a day off here and there (be it monday or friday) won't hurt too much! we all need our personal days to keep us sane!

I once worked as a bartender and one of the cocktail servers called in "sick" one day - her brother had died in an accident a few months before and she said that her mom was upset and she was going to comfort her.

About 3 hours later, two women walked into the bar, sat down and asked for Diane, the absent server. I told them that Diane had taken the night off to be with her mom, who was still upset about the brother. It turns out the two women were Diane's sister and mom (who must have miraculously recovered from her grieving episode). Big Grin

Ditto!!

I once really wanted to just have a day to myself - didn't want to go anywhere though. I thought about saying that I felt sick and the idea of lying repulsed me so much that I actually started to fell sick!! Hey presto - I had my day off!!

Migraine. If I cann't be bothered turning up and really need a day to myself, Itell them Ihave a terrible migraine and I've taken medication , which causes drowsiness.

The truth is I DO suffer from migraines, so I can sound convincing. I just don't make a habit of it too often.

Have a nice day, Whistler.

Be careful. As an evil HR Manager, I am well-versed in the signs that an employee is calling in sick when they are nothing of the kind. Fridays and Mondays instantly raise suspicions, and a trend of taking such days will definitley get noticed.

My company doesn't have sick days, we just get a lump of days we can take off for personal reasons, whatever they may be. I think that makes much more sense. That way, being as healthy as I am, I get more vacation days. Smile

Pink eye works well. It can buy you a couple of days without a trip to the doctor. Before you go back to work, simply rub your eyes for a good fifteen minutes and wait for the sympathy to roll in....deservedly so...deservedly so

One of the major downsides to working for your family's business: Not being able to take a "sick day". Because when I call in sick, my boss (aka my Dad) tells my mom. And then I get a worried phone call from home. "Is everything all right sweetie? Your father told me you werent feeling well." Ugg.

This is made even more impossible by the fact that I am temporarily living at home saving up for my trip. So, its almost like playing "sick" from school and putting up an act for the entire day. I feel like im 15.
