I work at a grocery store in a bad part of town; evening shift. Because of the area, security is required as homeless/drunk/people on drugs come in and cause a scene. What I am wondering is, say a person comes in high or what not and stabs me with a syringe or a knife or whatever, what kind of protection do I have in regards to pain and suffering/hospital bills and so forth? Im a union member, and have thought about calling up someone from there but thought id get some opinions first. Just wondering, not sure if my student wage is worth risking my health and safety.

my guess is it isn't worth it, but you definitely need to talk to someone about it.

Are you working in the downtown Eastside? If so, I think your risk really isn't worth it. Really. I used to do some volunteer work at the Firehall Arts Centre and had to catch a bus at Main & Hastings at about 10pm. The day I had to walk around the fresh pools of congealing blood on the sidewalk, I decided it was time to stop going to that neighbourhood after dark, if at all.

Nero, On the job. The area I work in is safe during the day, but at night all the homeless people come out. Ive had a guy come in to return his empty soda bottles and buy something, with blood pouring down his face and when he handed me the change there was blood on the coins. Of course I didnt take it, but that kind of thing stirred me up abit.
