I can't hold out any longer. Everyday at my work is doing my head in as my work still have no idea that I'm leaving on the 5th of August! So, I'm going to tell them on Friday and supply them with a large 7 week notice Smile

Then at least I can talk openly about my trip without worrying.

My boss keeps on giving my new 'projects' to do and seeing as I'm the only one in the office with the technological know how I'm going to have to tell them I'm leaving before they train me in more mondane computer systems.

7 weeks is a long time, but I think I would prefer having worked dumped on me than sit there worrying constantly about the day I'm going to hand my notice in.

Someone support me!!

I think you are doing a noble thing! People at my husband's workplace are not even giving a notice, they just quit and walk out- and he works in a very prestigious place! People have no sense of respect these days- the least people could do if give a proper notice- you never want to burn bridges!

I'll support you Mr. burb. Giving that much notice is a noble thing to do. And any trip(s) you're about to take will go far in your education as a member of the human race.

God-speed to you sir.

Good for you 7 weeks is quite enough time for them to find a suitable replacement.

I haven't yet quit and talk about travel and quitting all the time. It seems the more a talk about it the more I've settled in my mind that it's going to happen and the more it won't be a surprise to people around me.

Congrats on actually picking a date.

Good for you!

I can relate. I am leaving in mid September I already bought the ticket. I am in a position that some one else has to be trained for and I know I should let them know right now but I hate this company so much that part of me wants to walk out on them. But that would leave my co-workers stranded to pick up the slack. Also if I tell them then I will be bombarded with questions from 70 different people about my trip that I do not really care to answer. I think I will give them 4 weeks and compromise. I do not care about my work any more either. I used to. Now I am major slack ass. Just do enough to get by and I hate that feeling because I like to feel good about what I do but I cannot because I am tired of this job and this company and I hate them both.

I really do feel like walking out on them. I have always been there for them when needed and they do absolutely nothing for us. Bunch of cheap Asses wont even supply water to put on top of our cooler.

Sorry did not mean to go off and steel your thread. Its just I am in a similar situation and am very bitter and undecided about it

I can also relate - I just gave my notice in, giving them 7 weeks to replace me. Like you, I wanted it off my chest so I could freely talk about it - so many times did I nearly blurt out something about travelling!

it's cool to give 7 weeks. I personally think it's too long but if you like the company then it's cool.

I would give 1 month if it was a Company I like and I didn't want to burn bridges. If it was a company I hated that was run by a bunch of monkies, I would give my two weeks notice and come to work and do ABOSLUTELY no work until they tell me go home (in which by law they would still have to pay me my two weeks)

Or just walk out on them and leave on ym trip without even a call to them that i'm quitting. Depends on how badly I dislike the job and place.

Not in the US. They can escort you out the door without any free money anytime they want. Most companies won't, but you certainly don't have any legal protection.

In a lot of companies in the US, that's a good way to lose all your accrued vacation pay.

hmm that sucks.

Yeah I haden't thought about the vacation money. That would be a very good reason to stay the two weeks.

Giving seven weeks notice is a good thing to do. What you should also do, only if you want to keep working there after you return, is try to talk them into giving you a leave of absentence. I started planning a three month trip for next May through July, and my boss got wind of it and he's already trying to get HR to put me on a leave of absentence. The good side of it is I would get to keep my medical insurance while I'm gone, the downside is I'd have to come back to work here!
