I told my dotted-line boss of sorts about my plans today.

Everyone in my dept reports directly to the VP of communication, but this one guy oversees a certain area so I work with him much more than the VP. I wasn't sure how he would react, since we don't have a lot of bandwidth right now. Took it wayyy better than I could have expected and is very supportive. Will tell the boss when she's back from vacation next week. I'm sure she'll be equally supportive.

Hard part's almost over!!

Wow Justin - that's awesome... and probably a HUGE weight off your chest. When's your last day exactly? I thought you weren't leaving til September... that's some huge notice! :-)

Aug 31 is my ideal last day. Yes, I gave them a big heads up, but we're a small department at a major company, and hiring folks has not been very easy in the last year. I have a good relationship with my boss. Also, though I'm really in an entry-level position, I have a lot of institutional knowledge that I'd like to help transition, if at all possible... we'll see.

I know other folks would have advised only two weeks, but I think all parties will be better served with a longer notice in my situation

Congrats.

It is interesting to me...the one thing many people assume is that others will not be supportive of them traveling/moving on/etc., when, in fact, the opposite is often true. Most people just want others to be happy and fulfilled. It is our own prejudices about people who make different choices than our own that make us think otherwise.

I didnt suspect he would be unsupportive, just that he'd go into "recovery" mode -- trying to figure out next steps, rather than simply seeing this as a good thing. He has a ready, shoot, aim mentality sometimes.

From what I've read about other folks experiences here, that seems true (although there's always the odd a-hole boss that chews someone out). I dont think in my case that anyone will be unsupportive and I love all my jobs, but I intend to give way more than 2 weeks notice so I dont leave anyone high and dry so to say. I think a month or so is good so that no bridges are burned.
