I'm having one of those days where you just want to go home and cry. Any suggestions on how to make it for the next 5 hours?

Sorry to hear about your day, Kathryn. Man, those days suck. It's like everyone's main purpose is to just kick you in the ass. The only thing that saves me at work is the map of the world right above my desk. I look at it several times a day and dream... Hang in there! Tomorrow has GOT to be better!

Thanks!

I'm so torn right now as to whether I should just stick out the next 8 months here or move on temporarily. I don't have a single friend who is really good with the career stuff. I just really don't know what to do.

Hi Kathryn,
I'm so sorry you're having a bad day. Believe me, I've been there.

What I do to make it through the day is either remove a few things from my office that I brought from home(like a picture, book, etc...) because it makes me feel like I'm clearing out my room a little at a time, and by the time the big day arrives, I'll have very little to pack up!

Or I'll start thinking about my resume and start writing down a list of all of my work responsibilites. By the time I need to update the resume, I'll have that handy list ready.

I hope your day gets better. Smile

Jen

Thanks so much! I'm thinking about reworking the resume tonight and applying to new jobs. I don't know if its worth being upset for the next 8 months here.

Kathryn,
I am so totally in the same boat. I've been needing a change sooooooo bad, but its too late I feel for me to change :-( I need to work the rest of this summer with this job since I can do it remote and will then be going back to Illinois, but 8 months is a long time and I think if you can do something to make you happier, do it.

Good luck!

Hmm. Aren't you planning on a RTW, Kathryn? How long have you been with your current company? As much as I hate to be a potential downer... One thing I would think seriously about is longevity in my work history. When you get back, employers are likely going to look at you a bit strangely, regardless. If you have too much job-hopping beforehand, I'd think it would make getting back on your feet even harder. Job-hopping plus long gaps (from RTW, etc) can make anyone look like a flake - even if they're not.

Just my $.02.

As for what I do... I crunch numbers: "Staying here for X length of time will allow me to save Y amount of money that I could do Z with." (where Z may be a trip, my down payment/mortgage fund, or my ultimate escape from corporate life)

I know that what your saying makes sense. In the end it's what I'll end up doing. I just have to whine and complain in the mean time.

Hey Kathryn I feel your pain at the moment i am going through the same thing myself.

I used to love my job and now as time approaches ever near - my bosses are starting to treat me like nothing - they are pee'd off with me cos they keep asking me to stay for another year and i keep saying no!

I was torn with the idea of just quitting and temping for the last three months - but decided against it in the end as i cant afford to turn down the money they pay me - but to annoy them at my job i have post it notes everywhere with countdowns on.

I also slightly disagree with the last post as i dont think taking time off to travel is seen as a bad thing anymore. I have spoken to managers who said that it shows so many marketable skills to go and travel. I also think 8 months is going to fly by - but do what makes you happy - thats all that matters in the end.

Mich

Thanks so much everyone. I'm feeling a lot better today. I think that I'm just going to ignore the things that upset me. I was thinking about my dad last night who did a job for years that treated him like crap. It was much worse for him. I can stick this out. I think that the only reason I can stick it out is because I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Goddamn, another day where jumping off the roof seems preferable to sitting at this desk any longer.

Just leave then... are you under financial obligations to stay? I think you said you already had your goal of money to leave in another thread. Just quit if it's that horrible, and get a job at a place like Costco which pays a decent wage to start out.
