So here is the thing.
Your current boss not only does not like you but wants you gone from their section. They have made it plain from day one and made your work life a living hell. It boils down to go or I'll make sure you do not have a career worth spitting on. Now when it comes to it I've been saying from day one while I do not agree with all that has been said if they really think I'm not suited and want me gone I will agree to go. Yet then my boss does a back flip and does the whole 'oh no think about it we will help you do not think we are trying to get rid of you. But if you really think you have a deficiency then we will accept your decision and help you find something that is more suited.' I might add that is when there is a witness that they have brought into the meeting. The 'go or else' conversations happen when there isn't one. Now the other side. My long service leave (3 months paid leave) is due at the end of this year. Right now that is seeming very tempting to flip a finger and just go and not come back. Yet if I stick it out for a few more years and save I can take at least 1 year off work on half pay. So if you were me.... and I know the info is limited since to explain all that is going on would take way to long... what would you do. Go in a few months time or wait it out, work in other areas and see how thing go then take a year off.. then flip them a finger while overseas... don't mind me... just had a very bad few months |

Hmmm ... not sure I entirely follow. Is the 3 months vs. 1 year leave an either or proposition? If you stay a few more years, will you get both? If you transfer to a different section will you still be eligible for the leave?
One thing's for certain, you have a pretty good gig with the prospect of these extended leave periods. I wouldn't just chuck that away ... if you can stand it. Then again, that's a big "if," and only know can answer because only you know what it's like on a daily basis. What are your long term plans? Just travel? Looking to set up in another country? Do you really care about your career or is it just a means to an end for the moment? |

Yikes...I say go! Why subject yourself to a few more years of hell just for ONE year off? Do you feel like it's worth the sacrifice?
I totally understand the desire to be financially secure (I have a cube myself) but if you are utterly miserable, why trade your sanity for a paid year off? Remember, at the end of that year, you return to hell. Why not find a way to leave NOW and travel? Or work overseas? Don't play by the rules if you don't have to!! |

I would seriously consider leaving your job. If you only had to wait things out a few more months, then yeah, I could see the benefits of staying. But staying at a job where you're completely miserable for a couple of years sounds terrible. That's too much time to subject yourself to that.

Thanks for your input guys. I was a little upset last night and had not realised how much the work situation was getting to me until things kind of came to a head (though it has been building for a few months).
jv - no I do not loose my leave if I go to another section. It's the same organisation. That is what I've decided to do for now at least by the way. I'll see how it pans out and if my current bosses attitude of me crosses over or not. When I think of it logically I was very happy with my job until the beginning of this year, and the arrival of the new boss. I think if I leave now it will be a knee jerk reaction to my current situation that may resolve by taking a sideways step. The way the leave works is it is kind of like a bonus for working for the organisation for 10 years. Its not an either or situation. I will get credited with 90 days extra leave (on top of my regular leave which is 6 weeks). After that the extra leave will continue to be credited, works out to about an extra 9 days per year. All of that combined with my original planned departure date adds up to a year off on half pay. Oh and my pay level will be such that even my half pay will, by then, be better than what many get for their normal pay. I guess when I think about it while there is so much I still want to do I see work as a means to an end. I can achieve that end a lot sooner in my current job than elsewhere. I guess I really do not care about being 'The Boss' or even one of the multitude of 'little bosses'. I guess this situation got to me because I do care about doing a good job and I give my all to what I do (even my current boss had to be honest and admit that). girlgoesglobal - strangely enough I can work overseas with my current organisation. That is part of what drew me to them. So thanks for drawing me back to that. My goal does not have anything to do with my current section. So I am taking a sideways step into a different section and refocussing on what I want to achieve. Aquarius83 - The great thing I guess is I can leave my current job without leaving the organisation. While I really wanted the skill set you've hit the nail on the head. I really am miserable there and it is so not worth it. Once again. thanks guys. |
