Wait, can a person be a #1 AND a #2? Because I hate and endure my desk job, but for the present I still prefer it over a non-desk job. A job by any other name... is still a job. Might as well earn good money and be in a climate-controlled environment.

you forgot #4 - which is the people who don't think there is any other way. - there are a lot of those people out there.

Some of my best friends are #1's all the way and I think that is great for them because it makes them happy. My problem is not the desk it's simply working for someone else. I hate working for other people. I hate asking for time off, time for the dentist, etc. I have managed to pretty much get around this for the last 3 years.

I hate the idea of lining someone else's pocket and asking to take time off or getting looked at poorly for coming in 5 mins. late, even when i am a very hard worker. I hate the little rules. If I want to watch the birds in the backyard and eat my cereal and i'm a few minutes late than i don't want to feel bad about it.

I used to be a #2(hate but do it).
Then I couldn't take it anymore, and did a #3(eat donuts out of the trash instead)
Which makes me into a #1 (I like the deskjob).

I used to be a really hands-on person that ran around until I got chained to a desk. Now I kinda like the concept. Low-impact, save my energy for weekends and prime-time TV, etc.
But my last job I had my walkman on all day and didn't get bothered. and prior to that, I did a lot of nightshift work, where I sat there, read a book, listened to the radio, or watched tv. And if it weren't for the hours, and pay, and fear of getting robbed(which happened after I left that job) I loved it.

So now I know it's not so much deskjob or no deskjob. It's "leave me alone"!
I'm not even anti-social and like dealing with people. I loved working in malls in high school. But give me a job where I just sit somewhere, and stare at a gauge, or listen and wait 9 hours for a radio transmission and I'll be in heaven!
This took me too long to figure out. I would've majored in something else had I known this!

I've had a few work days like this in my lifetime. I honestly didn't think they would ever end. Felt like 36 hours passed between 8 and 5. The normal days when I'm busy - especially physically busy are over in a flash, as workdays should be. I would probably be dead by now if I had worked in a office/cube the past 25+ years. 90% of my exercise comes from working.

i think the cube farm broke my spirit and reverted me back to being lazy.

I know what you mean about slow days though. When I did the mall or just customer service type jobs, the busier the better. I couldn't do the off periods when it was dead. it felt like forever. But that problem ended up being chained to a spot, stare straight ahead and do nothing.

I guess the difference is to give me some type of office, and the freedom to keep my mind occupied as long as the job gets done.

Yet, on the other end, I loved my time doing convention work. 1.5mile long building. 14 hours. Non-stop running.

I'm an extremist. Wink

Really makes the question hard to answer. All about comfort zones and adjusting I guess. And other factors.

I take my work with me on vacation - the girl by the swimming pool staring at her laptop screen, or the one in a Paris park in the middle of winter looking for a Wifi signal, - that's me.

I don't necessarily prefer a desk job, but for now, it works for me due to its flexibility, enjoyable work environment and fun staff.

#1 & #2 - I thought these jobs ware a myth or some kind of a stupid, low budget Hollywood horror flick. Bless you folks out there who founds the will and strength to get on with it. If anything, I consider my self as #3+. Love sunshine and happiness...
