Is your job boring? Mine is mind numbing, which is made worse by the fact I'm self managed, so I just have things I'm meant to be doing, but I just can't be bothered.

Which is very lazy, and not like me at all. But since deciding that we are going away I just can't bothered with it all.

God knows what it's going to be like when we actually have a leaving date (which we don't at the minute because we are waiting for our flat to sell).

So, how do you deal with the boredom of the working day?

Ooh, I had a job where I was largely self managed and in fact alone in an office sitting in front of a computer all day conducting mind numbing tasks. I realized something about myself- I need more structure than that and I also need a job I am passionate about. My drive and dedication fall to nothingness, I just don't have whatever it is that allows people to persevere doing jobs they dislike. I mean someone is paying me to be there and do the work so I should do it and do it well but I have an EXTREMELY hard time doing that. I was pretty disappointed with myself when I figured that out but it definitely has effected what jobs I decide to take.

That said I think every job has its boring/monotonous/routine moments and the way to push through, like Brooke said, is to set goals. Or make lists. Whatever you need to do so that one thing at a time the stupid, boring stuff gets done. Besides it takes time to make a plan/list and that's like pre-work time that helps ease you into the mind frame of actually doing the work. Sometimes it helps if I clean my desk off beforehand so everything is pretty and ready for me to dive in.

MY job is verrry boring. Help

But I have job and non-job goals to get me through. And looking forward to vacation time is helpful too. When I feel really unmotivated I tell myself that at a certain time I'm allowed to look at something on the internet, get up and walk around, etc. But until then i have to stay focused!

I think all jobs, no matter what the pay or what the situation, are boring from time to time. Honestly, I bet even folks we would normally view as having dream jobs find themselves occasionally bored--probably more often than we might think!

I guess my point is that boredom is just a natural part of life. Learn to ride it out, how to get necessary stuff done in spite of it, and above all making sure you're doing at least something every day that you're truly passionate about. Smile

If your job is constantly that mind numbing and you hate all the time, its time to find a new job. Truthfully I know more people who refuse to change their jobs because they seem to need the job security. Get a book called "What Color is Your Parachute?" and work your way through it. If you think the book is too long try "The Joy of Not Working" Both have excellent advice but for career changes the first is better.

I'm temping at the moment. Have been since December, while trying to find that permanent job that won't bore me to death.
I am not yet earning vacation time, so I don't have that to think about/look forward to.

what kinds of goals do you set for yourself? things like, I have to get A, B and C done by a certain time?

I know it's possible to have work where I'm not bored - off the top of my head, I can think of 2 jobs in the past 3 years that I've had that were quite good at keeping me busy and satisfied. Unfortunately, neither position was long-term.

My problem in this position is that the pace isn't really fast enough for me. There aren't any real deadlines, and if I work too fast, my supervisor runs out of work for me. I'm used to doing a million things at once and working with hard deadlines. This drastic change of pace has been a bit hard to deal with. Who knew that such boring and slack work could be so tiring? Maybe because it's not inspiring and invigorating?

Bush Trekker, you've mentioned that book in at least 2 threads, and I'm seriously considering looking into it. You don't work for the company, do you? Wink

LOL! My job is totally boring and slow right now. To keep myself occupied, I eavesdrop on the maid service that rents the office next door! I can't help it...they really have some interesting "discussions" and the walls are paper thin so what can I do? Sometimes they have knock-down drag-out cat fights that knock the pictures off of our walls! I'm serious! Remind me never to start a maid service business...

I have three jobs and 2 of them are pretty boring....but I deal with the boredom by either surfing the net or dreaming about the next time I can travel...and just generally thinking about the future and what I want out of life...
