Many people like to read newspapers when travelling in foreign lands. Which are your favourite newspapers and what makes their style/reporting better?
I've lived all over over and often read these papers : South China Morning Post ( Hong Kong ) The SCMP has local HK news plus stuff on China and the region. Its a fairly decent paper. The Evening Standard in a London paper that also has World and national news. I don't think its on par with the Times, but enjoy the local feel. The SBNP is a fairly low quality paper and I just check it out for the low down on local stuff. A link that I use to get all these papers is : Nick |

for short breaks i try not to read any whilst away.it keeps me detached from the uk.
apart from not reading/speaking another lanquage it also makes it difficult. For the longer trips what i find is what other countries write up as foreign news. The uk papers tend to have sections set aside sections for world news(broad sheets not the comics eg the sun) Whilst in NZ although they do report some world news but it can be limited The paper i read in the uk is The Independent Mon to Sat whilst Sun is the times. |

aka, the British tabloid press... bloody horrid jotting. I can't even bear to call it writing, much less reporting... sensationalistic rot... good for a laugh sometimes though. While in Scotland I found very little use for the British papers... only printed publication I read much was The List, so I could find out what was happening that weekend. Very cool magazine.
Otherwise, in general I try to avoid reading papers and such when I'm traveling. I only have so much concern about current events as it is, and when traveling, well, the most I ever want to know is what's happening fun-wise wherever I am at the time. That's about the extent of it... |

If i really feel the need to get my fill of news while travelling i usually pick up a Herald Tribune. It reports news from all over the world and is available in most parts of the world as well.

When I am on the road...I read whatever I can get my hands on. If it's the local edition of whatever, sure, I read it. I did find that through Asia the Herald Tribune was what I frequently ended up with.
Sometimes it is strange, if I haven't read a newspaper or kept up with events for a month or two. I come back and it all seems so new, but so old at the same time. Same shit, different day. Nothing beats being on the road and not caring. |

I've done some research on US newspapers and 3 of the one I recommend are :
NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/ Chicago Tribune http://www.chicagotribune.com/ San Jose Mercury News http://www.sjmercury.com/ All these papers have large reporting rosters and make an effort to keep quality high. I also like the fact that you can e-mail the journalists from each department. Nick |
