I'm going on a around the world trip in April. I have been looking at various travel insurance packages (medical / delays / baggage) etc. They seem to range from $350 to $1,000 (depending on the cost of your trip).

I started looking into the benefits of AMEX Platinum - and they looked as good if not better than most of the travel insurance options. There are no deductibles and AMEX also offers discounts and traveler's assistance in other ways.

A platinum AMEX costs $300 year. I have dealt with AMEX before, and their customer service is good. Maybe easier to deal with than trying to make a travel insurance claim.

Does anyone out there have an opinion about this? Thanks for your response

With all travel insurance policies, you really have to read the fine print. Seems like you doing that. Usually travel insurance is not based on the cost of your fare but on the countries that you are visiting and length of time away. When travelling around the world you would take the highest level to cover all possibilities.

These days most policies do not cover you for what they class as high risk activities, such as whitewater rafting, skiing etc., you need to take out extra cover for these. I did find one policy, here in Oz, designed for the young adventure traveller that did provide cover for this but most don't.

Read your AMEX policy carefully, plastic cards may not cover you for what you think. I haven't read their policy so I can't comment.

Sounds like you've pretty well decided on it.

I have a few platinum credit cards (not amex) and they offer certain types of insurance when you us ethe card to purchase various things, like it'll insure the car if I rent it.

Definately agree with Jenz, read the fine print....that should tell all.
