Ok, I know summer is a million years away, but I my brain is already there!!

I got a new, fabulous, supercool job as a teaching assistant at a local high school which means I HAVE THE SUMMER OFF!! I will have no money to "just" travel, so I'm hoping to get a great summer job either here or in another part of the U.S./Canada. Summer '08 there is a strong possibility I will be living/working in Nashville, but there are lots of summers to come still!! I'm making another post for location suggestions - for this post I'm looking for job ideas.

If you could do any job you wanted for one summer, what would it be and why?

TA,

I got a few things that I would like todo.

1) Be a waiter in Yellowstone National Park for a summer. I did it back in 1997 but don't think I appreciated it as I would today. A simple job, lotsa cash, and time to explore the backcountry of a beautiful place on earth

2) I think I would like to sell peanut or Bud Light at Wrigley Field for a summer.

3) I think I would like to work on a huge farm or just a farm for a summer.

Tracy,

If you think you'll be in Nashville for summer '08 and want a fun summer job in the area, you should take a look at the summer camp program at the Adventure Science Center. It's a day camp for local kids that's designed to be fun and hands-on while also teaching basic science concepts. They hire local public school teachers to lead the different classes. The kids and the people working there are GREAT. It's a very laid-back learning oriented environment. I spent a summer there as a teaching assistant and loved every minute of it.

Sean those are definitely all options that have crossed my mind at some point (well, except I subbed Fenway for Wringley, lol)... great minds think alike, hay?

Liforce, thanks for that link! That will be perfect if I'm in BNA. I just emailed them to get more info Smile

recently heard about gigs available in Bora Bora at one of those amazing resorts with over-the-water bungalows.. they need westerners (preferably with knowledge of multiple languages) for guest relation type spots. they've got like 6 month contracts which dont pay much but cover your expenses. living in paradise...

Ok, so it looks like I will be in BNA from July 5 to August 11 this summer. That is, of course, as long as I can find a job!!!

My two stumbling blocks:

Minor: It's only about 5 weeks

Major: The pay scale is so absurdly low compared to what I would make being in the metro-Boston area for the summer. (I will still have all the same bills in BNA as I do at home, plus I'd be trying to save to move in September!!)

Suggestions?!?!

Yeah, the local pay scale is crappy, but the cost of living is also pretty low (30% lower than Boston, according to this cost of living calculator ). I'd recommend taking advantage of that as much as you can. Summer is the best time of the year for free entertainment, and it's also the best time to find housing. We have a ton of colleges in the area, and the rental houses near the various campuses will empty out a bit in the summer. People graduate and leave, or they go home for the summer, or they find new housemates, whatever. It's a big transition time with lots of rooms going unoccupied, so you may be able to get a room for cheap.

Did you hear anything back from the science center?

I'll actually be living with my sister, so housing won't be an issue. The problem is I'll be trying to pay my bills from HOME (so, Boston cost of living) with Nashville money.

I never did hear back from the science center... now that I know my exact dates that I'll be there I'm going to try to get in touch with them again.

Random question, but do you know of any bars that serve microbrews or specialty beer imports? I have work experience in that area, and bars are pretty good for short-term, high-pay.

Gotcha. Boston cost of living on Nashville pay. That's rough. The pay won't be stellar at the science center, either, so bar work might be best. We do have some good prospects in that area.

These bars will be your best bets for lots of microbrews and imports:
The Flying Saucer
The Beer Sellar
Beyond the Edge
Broadway Brewhouse

You might also try these restaurant/breweries, but you might end up waiting tables rather than tending the bar:
Bosco's - Excellent award-winning beer, but no imports here.
Blackstone's - More award-winning beer and very good food.
Big River Grille - This is a popular place, but not my favorite. It's right smack in tourist central. Probably a good place for tips, though, especially in the summer.

You rock. Waiting tables works, still decent money! I've been to Big River, not my favorite place either, but you gave me lots of other ideas, thanks! Smile

Sounds like an itinerary for the
Great 2008 Nashville Meetup Smile

Yes, it does, Bill. And that meetup will definitely be happening. JoeVol and I have already been talking about plans. I'd say line-dancing in Nashville and camping in a National Park are definitely on the list!
