It was expected to some extent but still once the word comes out its a little shock.

I wanted to understand from you guys who have been through it how you processed the information and also how you dealt with the options you have. I'm sure each case was different but I want to understand who you talked to at work, your manager, HR etc etc. What was the process to evaluate your options...how did you do it.

I have already been asked to look into other jobs at my work place and they want me...but not so sure I want them.
I have a decent severance package if I choose to take it but it comes after 3 months of searching for a job either with my company now or externally.During that 3 months I don;t have to be at work...but knowing me I will be working every second of it.

Give me an idea how you handled this emotionally as well...I thought I was fine but now am not so sure. CHange is good but decision making is hard.

Anyway, not sure what to do...I know I know...I should back my bags and leave for a while.

Madhu, weren't you just mentioning that you've enough money saved up for a 2 year rtw? And that you hadn't yet seemed to motivate yourself to take the first step?

Life has a funny way of giving us a loving kick out the door now and again. Smile

Go there, buy a ticket to somewhere you've always wanted to go. And do it before you can convince yourself not to. Wink

my husband & I were just preparing to do final 3month countdown to our RTW and then HE got laid off. After the first day of stressing about it, our house sold on day 2 on the market and it turned into a HUGE blessing as he is able to be getting us all packed up to move out while I'm still working. If we were both working full time AND trying to move everything we'd be basket cases.Things do happen for a reason!
As Continental Op said... sometimes life gives you just the kick you need to make something happen! Buy that ticket and go for it.

Madhu, sorry to hear this.

But you have mentioned to me in the past wanting to go on a little trip to Spain? A little trek? I think now's the time (although...it'll be hot there!).

When I got laid off, it wasn't unexpected, but I had been treated so poorly that I wanted to be the one to leave. My manager was horrible, the HR person I dealt with was horrible. I couldn't talk to anyone in my direct sphere. They even tried to screw me out of 2 weeks of severance, which I had to fight for. This was in mid-November, so it was a soft time in the job market. Plus, it was back in 2003 when the market hadn't quite rebounded yet.

You are in a good position in that there are a lot of job openings right now. And you got a good severance, so why not take advantage of it. Take a month or so off, relax, travel if you feel like it.

I get too stressed when I travel without a job to come back to. I learned that the hard way...my severance wasn't that great and since it was during the holidays, I didn't go anywhere. My pride was a little hurt, and I was bored as hell the first few days, but then I just enjoyed it!

I'm pretty sure that "severance package" is Latin for paid vacation.

I've never been laid off before but I can dream.

I had a trip planned in July to go to Netherlands and then home to India ..so that is still in the works. I will be back in 4 weeks though as I will be in the 90 day transition period...i will get paid for those 90 days and will not be doing much...they give us time to find a job.

After that if they find me a comparable position then we shall see...if not its about 9 weeks of Severance. Not much but not bad either.

Mentally not prepared to travel yet..I have to apply for my citizenship which am going to do right before I leave for India so that after I come back I can do the fingerprinting and interviews etc...so I have to be in the US..or not travel too far.

I just don't know what I want to do..work wise..maybe I will try and figure it out this time. The company also will help with Career placement and all that junk...so might as well take advantage.

Best thing in all this is I have a manager who I can trust...but in the end I have to take care of myself.

Still bothers me though..nothing to do with our team and nothing to do with the people but feels weird to know that you were not wanted. I will have no problem getting a job but I want more than a job...jobs are easy..careers are hard to make sometimes if you join the wrong job. But maybe time to change careers as well.

Thanks all...I feel okay. I have been seriously living in the present these days so not worried at all. But kinda emotional about this which will pass as well. I can be a total sentimental sometimes.

Anyway...thanks for listening.

Would you believe it...its been a month since they told us, then untold us, now we kinda know but are not supposed to tell. Finally I told my boss to put me on my transition status so that i can "f-ing" start thinking seriously what i need to do.

I already have some offers from my current employer but seriously this seems to be a opportunity to seriously think about my next step. More than anything I want to change my career path....find something I really love to do but what.

But first things first...a 4 week trip starting next week.

Holy crap Madhu!

Well, sounds like things are not dire and should you need work, its around. You're industrious and I'm sure it will be all good.

Are you back from your trip yet? I'm off to Spain in the fall....

PC just came back from NL and India. 4 weeks. I'm in trainsition now and have my job until the 3rd of Oct. If I tried I would find a job within the same company...no problem at all. My reputation preceeds me and I was lucky to be offered some options.

Question is do I want it? I;m so de motivated with work right now..I don;t see how I;m adding value. All am doing is earning a living nothing beyond it. I know some might kill for my job and the pay that comes with it even.

Just not motivated to work....

@Halfnine: Ah Bhutan...humm..already applied for my US citizenship been 4 weeks now. I don;t think I have the time to go to India/Bhutan again before the process is finished. Timing will be tricky if I want to travel on my Indian passport.Ah well I guess I might have to pay the US rate when I do go there.
