i finally did it. okay, not so dramatic considering i've only been there a year and a half, but i've been planning on doing it pretty much since i started. i was nice about it, gave them a 2 week notice today. my boss was sad so i told her i would work an extra day, just for her. i really like the job but it's time for me to travel and do some other things.
one of the first things i want to do is to take some sailing classes. i started sailing in 2004 but i never got certified and haven't done it a lot in the past few years. when i get to traveling, i would like to work and travel. does anyone know if there are temporary or long-term jobs in other countries that involve sailing?? i have heard that teaching SCUBA is a popular job is SE Asia.
before i take off to another country i would like to travel in the states for awhile, but keep costs down. has anyone been able to do this? did you just camp on the side of the road to avoid the high cost of lodging?

it was quite spontaneous. i was about to go to work and i decided that i was going to do it that day. and i thought i was gonna work there all summer just a few days ago! it was thinking about my summer vacation that started it. i get 1 week of vacation per year, but i couldn't figure out what to do with 1 week, it just wasn't enough, so i resigned! i guess i will lose my 1 week paid vacation, but it's a price i'm willing to pay.

I know a fella who runs charters in the Med. He can always use someone who knows how to tie a decent knot. Drop me your email in a PM and I'll be happy to pass it along. (Not promising anything, but he might have something.)
Please note: the above member, who is the very model of a modern major-general, with information vegetable, animal, and mineral, has retired from BnA and won't be able to answer any follow-up questions. If you really need to speak with him, use the PM function. Please direct all Schengen visa questions here. Likewise, expat questions go here. Remember to vote tiger penis. Oh, and if possible, be kind to Jester and Stoo.

right now i'm still land bound in the US, but plans are taking place quickly. in the past i had to decline all the offers from my friends, who always have plans of going here or going there. looks like i'll be hiking in New Hampshire, the White Mountains, in a few weeks, followed by sailing for most of July. then in August i will be going to Pennsic, followed by more sailing for the rest of the summer. then in September i will be going overseas, either Europe or Asia, haven't decided quite yet. i might do some odd jobs over the summer so my resources don't dwindle, but doing odd jobs is much different than going to a place to work 9-5 for 5 days out of the week, and i can decide when i want to work.
thanks everyone for the support!

wow, i can hardly describe it. well, the day i put in my notice was exhilirating, it felt like i was walking on air, and like a large burden was lifted from my shoulders. the days that have followed have set my mind racing. not only with thoughts of travel, but also with thoughts on what i want to do with "down-time."
i think that most people WANT to work. most people like to be productive in some capacity, and i'm no exception. except that it took me quitting my job to realize that i can be independent and self-supporting without working for someone else. i'm anticipating travel burnout, perhaps a little prematurely. but i know that i won't be able (or even want) to travel nonstop. i guess it is because i like getting to know places and people, which requires staying in a place for more than a month or two. my goal is to integrate travel into my life, rather than make it something that i get to do only after i've saved for X years.

btw - it looks like me and my girl will be leaving for New Hampshire from Detroit on june 3rd. if anyone needs to make a trip along that route way PM me and we could split gas costs. i think we will have room for 2-3 people. i might also post on this craigslist rideshare. we'll be coming back from NH to Detroit near the end of june.
