A leg to stand on

One of nine Caribbean flamingo chicks is looked after by an adult, Tuesday, June 27, 2006, in San Diego. The recently-hatched chicks may soon have company. With several more eggs on the conical nests, zookeepers are hoping more of the downy gray chicks will soon join the flock. Both male and female flamingos sit on the nests and raise and feed the young birds. (AP Photo/The San Diego Zoo, Ken Bohn)

The salt of the earth

For several months every year, traders from the Ethiopian Highlands make the arduous journey north to the Danakil Desert with their camels in search of salt. At the heart of the salt harvest, lifters use rough wooden poles to lever up slabs of salt which are then cut into blocks. Like the camel men, the lifters travel up to 150 miles from the Ethiopian Highlands to work in the salt fields. See the whole photo story here.

Ruff decision

In Seattle, Washington, and unusually well-trained English Bull Terrier - not named “skobb”, bizarrely enough - exhibits extraordinary self-discipline when his favorite toy rolls under an off-limits piece of furniture. Given this conundrum, the tennis ball is naturally "static".
