Hi, I'm off to Portugal towards the end of September (99) and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend some cheap but good places to lay my head. I'm not really interested in dorm-style hostels, but tips on cheap pensiones, cheap hotels, B&Bs, etc. would be nice.

I'll be travelling alone, and will be in Lisbon, Lagos, Porto, and a handfull of other places.

Advice?

I'm headed there myself in July and wouln't mind the same advice. But what is "cheap"--different for different people. You might want to look at the Ulysses Travel Guide for Portugal. I really like this guide because it has very detailed and candid information on sleeps and eats at every level, including dirt cheap, and also rates places cleanliness, security and intangibles like the "friendly factor". This guide is packed with practical information and isn't too heavy--But it doesn't have many pictures. The pretty picture guides are what I look at before the trip, but this guide is the one that I'll actually buy and take with me.

You want to be carefull in Lisbon when trying to find cheap accomodation. Most B&B's are of shitty standard and owned by shady Pakistani's looking to rip you off.

Book ahead and stay away from downtown B&B's.
