My current contract ends in September and I'm determined to get in at least three or four weeks of travelling before getting stuck in employment again - but where to go? The only thing I know is that my budget'll be £1500 max. and I fancy somewhere like N India/Nepal/Sri Lanka. Can anyone tell me how far this could stretch without too much risk? I'm 23 years old and female, not particularly easy to scare but also not keen on placing myself in a dodgy situation.

Don't let the idea of a limited budget scare you in terms of safety. Money doesn't make you safe; only common sense can do that!
Your best bet is to get a hold of a Lonely Planet guide to that part of the world and go from there. There is always safety in numbers so even if you initially set off alone, be open to meeting people to share rooms and half the rent. You'll have a blast. As for how long you'll make it stretch - I'm a terrible judge of distance and time! Bon Voyage!!

if you are in India over the winter, after october when monsun in south finish, then visite beaches (weather there is pleasent). You could take a look in the village Gokarna in Karnataka. Many young people from all over the world stay there. Beautifull place and beaches (famous "Om" beach - half hour walk from the village), nice people, life is cheap & easy, every day sun , what would you wish more?

Sophie,

In late '95 I spent 4 monthes in India ? Nepal. I had my ticket and took $2,000 US. I returned with $200. You have plenty of cash if you budget and don't stay in luxury hotels. I pretty much ate and drank anything I wanted to and travelled around quite a lot. I also spent a month in Goa at peak season. I would advize you to take a Visa card with you just in case, although I don't think you'll have any problems. If you figure on spending $10US per day you can get a good idea of how far your cah will go. There will be times when you'll spend $15-$20, other times $5-$10 depending on where you are and what you do.
Good luck
