Howdy y'all. I live in San Francisco, but my kinfolk hail from the Deep South. That's Louisiana for you yankees, and yes, my people are Cajuns.
I teach college mathematics with means I get a lot of time off for travel. I'm not really having fun unless there is some suffering involved, so most of my trips have been mountaineering or surfing trips. This year will be my first bicycle trip. I'll start out in Beijing to study Mandarin, then ride the Karakorum Highway, then ride through Turkey, and a bunch of other places before heading to Cairo to study Arabic. Och aye, Rosemary here!
Currently an 19 year old unemployed (bum) and living in Edinburgh with my mother. Throughout my childhood my family travelled all over Europe, mainly within France, Spain and Portugal. Just after leaving school my best friend and I travelled round "down under", but only for a month. I'm not long back from another trip to that area of the world with my mum (New Zealand) which i fell in love with from the moment we flew over it. I've had the 'travel bug' for a while now and am extremely excited to start travelling on my own. I have lived in Scotland all my life (infact I've never moved house once) and love it here in Edinburgh. I have yet to explore my own country and when I move north to Aberdeen for university this September I hope to use some of my spare time to get to know "home" =). Job hunting to I can start saving for all my uni/travel plans in the future! I hope to give and gain useful advice here ... |

Hey All!!!
Richard Roaf here. Am 20. live in London where im 2 years into my philosophy degree. Im off on june the first for a month in malaysian borneo, a month in indonesia then a 40 days split between peninsular malaysia and thailand. Am massively excited as my backpacking experiences have been limited to beautiful but tame Australia. If anyone is thinking of going to Borneo (Sarawak then Sabah) around the same time (June to July) then it would be great to meet up and save £ on paying guides etc. Bye Bye |

Hi everyone
My name is Troy Farmer. I'm 25 years old and have been living on the Gold Coast in Queensland for the past 6 months, after spending my life in Melbourne - and I'm a self confessed travel addict I guess my love of travel stems from my first ever trip overseas 4 years ago where I was nearly killed in an avalanche in the Modi Khola on the Annapurna Base Camp trek in Nepal. I'd never felt so alive. Ever since then I've been trying to top that first travel experience by travelling to wilder and wilder places to try and recapture that feeling of living on the edge. Since then my top experiences have been crossing the southern edge of the Rub Al Khali in Yemen in a truck full of AK47 wielding Bedouin, and having lunch with a member of the Taliban in Dubai of all places. And since I am just about to embark on a career change, I've decided to try my luck with a trip through Central Asia in June, travelling Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and maybe Afghanistan, and then back to Yemen, Eritrea and Ethiopia if I've still got the energy. Anyways I just wanted to introduce myself and say that I look forward to hearing and giving any advice on travel in general. "You only possess what you do not lose in a shipwreck" |

I prefer laughing with the locals instead of fearing with the locals.
However, it sounds like you have quite an adventure ahead of you. ____________________________ "Of the gladdest moments in human life, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands. Shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of Habit, the leaden weight of Routine, the cloak of many Cares and the slavery of Home, one feels once more happy. A journey, in fact, appeals to Imagination, to Memory, to Hope, the three sister Graces of our moral being." - Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton |

My name is John Rybczyk, my wife and I retired, retired about 7 years ago. And we travel. That's what we saved for and retired for. We traveled alot while I was in the military (31 years) but we always had to come back to work. Now retired also from the State of Hawaii and my wife is retired from the Federal Government, we settled in The Villages, in Florida. Although its a great community with lots to do, we retired to travel and that is what we are doing. We go on tours, we travel on our own, we go thru agencies to find the best deals and we surf the web to find the best deals. Last year (2006) Poland, Ireland, and Hawaii were the big trips. This year we have already gone to Costa Rica and Bali, and leave in May for Turkey, June is Amsterdam and July is Budapest. Always looking for a good deal.

Hi Everyone!
Just want to say that I love the forum! I'd just been surfing the net and just typed in 'travel the world with kids and motorhome' to see what it came up with 'et voila' the perfect site which seems to have lots of discussion by people who've done it and some considering it which is great! Personally my husband and I have hit a kind of crossroads in our lives and are getting keen on the idea of 'taking off into the sunset' so to speak before we get too old.But we realise it's a big step and want to do as much research as we can to consider the pros and cons especailly in regard to our son who's 11. We've been living in France for the past year after moving here from Wales in the UK . I was lucky enough to give up my stressful job in the Health Service at the age of 41.My husband runs a successful business from home but would ideally like to sell it to raise funds for our next move. I never got the chance to travel and have never been out of Europe as I am terrified of flying so travelling by motorhome seems a good plan! A lot of decisions to make over the next year, such as whether to sell our place and move closer to the sea and simply take a year off to travel or just sell up and go permanently. We would really appreciate help and advice from those who've been or are in the process of travelling with kids. Cheers. |

Hi!
I haven't logged in here in a loong time, but I found this site very useful when planning a trip to Central America in 2005. I am an actor/singer from Helsinki, Finland and will soon turn 30. Travelling is a passion for me, I've been to about 30 countries. In July/August I might volunteer at a transit centre for refugees in Switzerland and after that I would like to go hiking in the Alps... However, I don't have any company and I guess that's one of those things it's better not doing completely on your own. So, does anyone know anything about groups hiking the Alps? Or anybody up for it themselves? Travel light! |

Hello -
I had been to Southeast Asia a few times in the 70s and 80s, my wife has been to Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. We are a little older than many out there and though we still like adventure, we like some comfort, too. Last year we flew into Ho Chi Minh City with a return ticket from Bangkok, and made it up as we went along, up the Mekong by boat to Phnom Penh, a bus to Siem Reap and a flight to Bangkok. This year the tickets are to Hanoi and return from Chiang Mai and again we will make it up as we go through North Vietnam, Lao and Northern Thailand. Our travel motto is: We don't want to be miserable, but neither do we want to be isolated from the experience by a cocoon of comfort. Jim & Shirley Twyford |

Hi there, I'm Chris O'Dea and it's great to see people here on the same wavelink! The idea of travel is one I've fallen in love with for the past few years - I love the notion of having no routine, of being able to go whereever you want to do what you want and experience true freedom - but more than that, travelling is a superb education and you can do so much to develop yourself as a person out there. Travelling calls to me - I want to get out there and meet people, see places; immerse myself in cultures and ways of life. I want more than the drudgery of the rat race and the shallow, self-obsessed culture that I find myself thrust into, but more importantly, I want to find myself in the world. I want to know who I am. And second only to that, I want to give the world a helping hand - as much as I love the freedom, it would need structure and purpose once in a while or I'd probably be driven mad! I want to try and change the world for the better in my lifetime and make it a better place for everyone. That's the significance of my screename - The Doctor. I feel as if I'm being called to arms to help out this world and, as I say, make it a better place; get it back to health. To literally be ‘The Doctor’. A noble goal to be sure, but it's finding the means to start out that lead me here! As far as structuring my travel goes, it doesn't go much beyond getting a plane ticket and getting out of here to wherever I land. I think I'll start by going to Uni in Australia and then from there, the world is my oyster. The freedom of no routine and going where I want is what is so wonderful - I could get on a plane to anywhere I liked, land there and spend however long I wanted immersing myself into the culture and learning from the experiences, meeting wonderful new people, gaining invaluable knowledge and having great memories before hopping on any other plane to any other place and doing the same. I don’t mean to lose myself in some sexed-up fantasy – I don’t know what will come on my journey and that’s the beauty of it; there’s so much to see and do and I want to see ALL of it, meet new people, go new places and gain the knowledge and experiences to discover myself and change the world. I’m grateful for having stumbled upon this site – feel free to talk to me any time, I’m a thoroughly nice guy and any contact or help from fellow travellers would be wonderful. All the best, Chris Looking for something... |

Goodmorning all. My name is Kat. I'm 27(Is that 30 I see on the horizon? And I havn't traveled the world yet?!!)I was planning a Year RTW with my BF of 8yrs but we broke up. Now I am trying to decide what to do with myself. I'd still like to go, but not alone and most all of my friends are married with kids. So I guess I'd like to find someone who would like to see the same places I would. I'd like to go in a year I guess. All up in the air right now.
Anyhow, I'm a chef and a writer. I'd describe my writing as Mythic Fiction. I work at an Inn in Maine www.norumbegainn.com and cook there as well as manage reservations. That's me in a nutshell. I'd love to chat with some old pro's so please feel free to message me. Ciao for now. Kat The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. ~St. Augustine |

Okay, okay... I've been lurking about long enough...
I am an opportunistic traveler--did someone say "roadtrip?"-- My overseas travel has, so far, been courtesy of frequent flyer miles given me by someone who travels worldwide for his work, and also, while courting my daughter wanted me out of the way for a while...) (No, really, he is a very generous fellow, and I appreciate it very much!) I spent a month in central Italy in September 2002 and have just returned from spending all of April in Singapore. I have driven the US and Canada coast-to-coast by various routes, usually alone. I love traveling solo, and making friends along the way. But my son has always been a terrific travel companion. I would do the Amazing Race with him! Comfort is nice, but mostly I want the experience of really being where I am, so no multi-star hotels for me! Not unless that is what the trip is about. I find that the best experiences come from the liberal use of courtesy and respect, including learning at least a few words of the local language--if nothing else, "Please" and "Thank you" and "Do you speak English?" (The last is not being cute: To open with a carefully-learned statement in the local language suggests you actually will understand the answer, and that can lead to confusion for a while; to open with your own language is like stating an assumption that the local folk ought to also speak it, which is not always a courteous or respectful assumption to make, or to be thought to be making. Besides, it warns the person you're talking to that the communication is going to be challenging to some degree, on both sides. And it is much better than just talking louder.) (I tell you these things not because I think you don't know them, but to show that I do... to give you some sort of idea what sort of traveler I am.) Courtesy can take you around the world. |

I'm Jeanette and live in Australia. I am a passionate traveller and photographer. Have done heaps of travelling through South East Asia, especially Indonesia and am known to my Balinese friends as Made - Made being second born. I am off to China,Hong Kong and hopefully Tibet in early August. I have done a fair bit of travelling throughout Europe, mainly Italy. Italy is easy for me as I have family scattered throughout the whole country so makes for very cheap travelling as I don't have the whole expensive accommodation thing to worry about.
I must say that this would have to be one of the best travel sites around. I can't believe the quality and calibre of postings on this site. Thanks guys for making it all such worthwhile reading. |
