there's a great article in todays observer about "experimental tourism"

experimental tourism

its loosely based on situationist theory, and is about subverting peoples idea of what it means to be a tourist. some of the ideas are great - i particularly like drawing a picture on a map and then walking round the city folowing the outline. others, like going to the same destination as your partner, but seperately, ad then wandering around till you find each other seem a little less silly. but still fun!

Smile That story is great! I've actually considered the "Return of the Native" option. But what do you do if you're out with the new backpacker friends and run into people you know??????

Bucky,

I believe that Observer scoop may be from an up and comming Lonely Planet book of Experimental Tourism.

The actual articles are almost word for word from their promo pack. I do especially like the "Erotravel" one where you and your partner go to a city and then knowing what they're like, try and hunt them out at x y z spot Big Grin

Awww

haha, I did return of the native in the Bay Area (I guess I count as a native? I'm moving to Berkeley soon anyway). It was one of the most interesting experiences of my life. I stayed for almost a week.. I never just chilled somewhere for so long in my life. I met a lot of interesting people, and got to know the city extremely well.

One of the people I met met up with me in LA later on, and we backpacked around for 5 days (no hostels though; we lived out of a tent and my car).. I learned a lot about Los Angeles that I usually miss while I'm zooming by on the freeway, and it was interesting seeing it from someone else's perspective. I never realized before how weird Los Angelenos all are.. :P

For a little while, I thought of "Erotravel". I'm going to Argentina and my boyfriend is going to meet me down there a week later. But I think Buenos Aires would be a tough town (too big, way too big!) to do that in. And I think he'd flip out as he speaks no Spanish at all and is not a 'seasoned traveller'...hmmm...
