Folks, within the next 15 minutes I need to decide where to book a ticket for me an my sister with dad's 80.000 air miles that are expiring today!

It's American Airlines, so it doesn't seem possible to get 2 tkt to a destination outside the US with those miles. It would be good though if knowleadged folks can have off-USA suggestions since my sister doesn;t have a US visa (I do, valid for 4 more years) and it's likely she will be turned down due to her profile.

US based ideas will also be appreciated.

Our idea is to book it today, then travel somewhen in 8 months from now (it will be valid for 1 year)

Oh, and I am based in Sao Paulo, Brazil

Thanks!

I'm thinking London as well, because with American we would necessarily need to go through Miami or New York no matter where we go, so the milleage should be enough for either a Madrid or a London tkt. London sounds cool cause of the Ryan Air flights out of there, which allows us to decide to head on to another place if we feel like it.

But Thailand? I'll check with them, but I don;t think 80k is enough for 2 tkts out of Sao Paulo, going through the US then on to Thailand.

update:
it's actually 92k we have on hand, and it's only enough for 2 people if destinations are within US, Canada and Central America.

Well, using my mad math skills, you said 8 months from now. You sure you want to be in the Canadian Rockies in December?

Mexico: Me gusta!

right, right. i don't think i will be able (=$saved) to be out of here within Canadian summer.

is it a problem with the ROcky mountains area, or should I avoid Canada's winter in general?

If you ask me my opinion, I'd say avoid it during the winter. But that's just 23 years of snowy winters creeping out of me.

And I'm also a dance instructor who loves to salsa. So, I'd choose a Latin country any day of the week.

Depends on how well you can deal with the cold. The Rockies are beautiful in winter, and if you ski, a ton of fun. If you don't ski, I'd still recomend heading to Maligne Canyon in Jasper (it's a river in Summer, an ice canyon in winter). There's some other winter attractions as well - hanging out in the hot springs pools is very relaxing, and well, that's pretty much everything I've done in winter, but I'm sure there's more.

Either way it's a beautiful place to visit, provided you won't be too cold and just huddle in your hotel all day.

there are many budget airlines in London - but ryanair is definitely the worst.

Thanks all! A decision has been made, a tiket has been booked. And the winner is Mexico, specifically the south of it. We're flying into Cancun (have no desire whatsoever to spend time there) go exploring the Mayan route and head towards Mexico city, where we fly back home from.

Now it may not be the most optimized routing, but I had like 30 minutes to make a decision before AA office closed. And I always wanted to go to the Chiapas region. And I always wanted to see the Mayan rouins. SO I guess it will work.

And if we are able to save money to leave by this November, like I booked the ticket, we may even catch the Dia de Los Muertos somewhere! If not i will push it back to March 2006 and who knows catch carnival, maybe.

(very little research has been done in those 30 minutes)

ALmost Free, i like your suggestions and I will keep them for later. I've always wanted to travel in Canada, but I am not sure if we both would be able to cope with the winter. Plus I know very little of it and was not able to come up with a destination within Canada.

Well, Mexico sounds good enough. Problem will be shoving my sister in localbuses and local guest houses. That will be hilarious. SHe's a total beach bunny, my complete opposite. I wonder how stressful it will be,since it will also be the first time I travel with company.

Anyway, it's Mexico! I got a free ticket to Mexico!

My understanding is that you're a nice person, Lets, so I'll refrain from saying how this actually makes me feel....and instead say, "Good for you!"

NTFT, I know you only wish me the best Wink

Sor, the sister got to go along, after all the source of the tkts is our father! She's quite into doint things my way, though, which will be so funny!

For instance, she agreed that we're flying into Cancun (and out of Mexico City) but we're NOT actually staying in Cancun or resort places alike. She wants to delay the trip untill next march (it's either this november or next march, we got to fly low season) so that we can save more money, accumulate vacation days and stay out for one month. She only demands that, in her own words: "we do not sleep in tents, climb or trek under the rain or sleep in roofless indigenous housing". he. I guess staying with the Zapatistas folks is out, then.

ANyway, I promise I'll think of you in the next free ticket I get.
